Removal

  1. Remove the cylinder head.
    For additional information, refer to Cylinder Head in this section.

  1. Remove the exhaust camshaft.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The valve tappets must be installed in their original locations.
    Remove the valve tappets.

  1. Loosen the valve collets.
    • Position a brass drift on the valve spring seat and gently strike it with a hammer.

  1. Using the special tools, remove the valve collets.
  1. Remove the valve springs.

  1. Using the special tool, remove the valve seals.
    • Discard the valve seals.
  1. Remove the valves.

Installation

  1. Install the valves.

  1. Install a valve stem mounting sleeve over the valve collet groove (valve shown removed for clarity).
  1. Coat the valve seals with clean hypoid oil.

  1. NOTE:
    NOTE:Install new valve seals.
    Using the special tool, install the valve seals.
  1. Remove the valve stem mounting sleeve.
  1. Install the valve springs.

  1. Using the special tools, install the valve collets.
    • Position a brass drift on the valve spring seat and gently strike it with a hammer.
  1. Remove the special tools.
  1. Coat the valve tappets with clean engine oil.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The valve tappets must be installed in their original locations.
    Install the valve tappets.
  1. Coat the camshaft bearings with clean engine oil.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:Make sure that the exhaust camshaft is positioned so that no exhaust valves are fully open.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:The inlet and exhaust camshafts are marked with two identification rings between the fourth and fifth cams. The exhaust camshaft has a larger space between the identifcation rings.
    Install the exhaust camshaft.

  1. CAUTION:
    CAUTION:The camshaft must not be turned for at least 15 minutes after tightening the camshaft bearing cap retaining bolts.
    NOTE:
    NOTE:The installation locations of the camshaft bearing caps are marked on the rear face of the cap.
    Install the exhaust camshaft bearing caps.
  1. Install the cylinder head.
    For additional information, refer to Cylinder Head in this section.
