Disconnect the battery ground cable. For additional information, refer to: Battery Disconnect and Connect (414-01 Battery, Mounting and Cables, General Procedures). | | -
NOTE:Make sure that the road wheels are in straight ahead position. Centralize the steering and lock it in position. | | -
Raise and support the vehicle. For additional information, refer to: Jacking (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation) / Lifting (100-02 Jacking and Lifting, Description and Operation). | | -
Remove the driveshaft center bearing retaining bolts. | Vehicles built up to 10/2001 | -
NOTE:Mark the position of the driveshaft flange in relation to the transmission output shaft flange. Detach the driveshaft from the transmission output shaft flange and position it to one side. | Vehicles built 10/2001 onwards | -
NOTE:Mark the position of the driveshaft flange in relation to the transmission output shaft flange. Detach the driveshaft from the transmission output shaft flange and position it to one side. | All vehicles | -
Remove the steering column flexible coupling lower nut and bolt. - Discard the nut and the bolt.

Disconnect the steering column flexible coupling from the steering gear pinion. | | -
Detach the power steering lines from the front axle crossmember. | | -
Remove the transmission support insulator to front axle crossmember bolts. | | -
NOTE:When using a two post lift. Support the engine with a wooden block. | | -
NOTE:When using a four post lift. Using a suitable transmission jack, support the vehicle under the engine crossmember. | | -
Lower the front axle crossmember (left-hand side shown). - Remove the nuts and bolts.

Install the special tool. | | -
Remove the hydraulic pressure unit (HPU) retaining nuts. | | -
Detach the clutch actuator from the transmission and position it to one side. | | -
Disconnect the reversing lamp switch electrical connector. | | -
Detach the heat shield and disconnect the crankshaft position (CKP) sensor. | | -
Disconnect the vehicle speed sensor (VSS) electrical connector. | | -
Disconnect the input shaft speed (ISS) sensor electrical connector. | Vehicles with tachograph | -
NOTE:Vehicles built up to 10/2001 have a four bolt transmission output flange. Vehicles built 10/2001 onwards have a three bolt transmission output flange. Disconnect the tachograph sensor electrical connector. | All vehicles | -
Remove the gearshift actuator cover. | | -
Detach the gearshift actuator from the transmission and position it to one side. | | -
Remove one transmission retaining bolt from the right-hand side and one from the left-hand side. | | -
Remove the remaining transmission retaining bolts from the left-hand side. | | -
Remove the remaining transmission retaining bolts from the right-hand side. | | -
CAUTION:Do not tilt the transmission during removal. This may cause damage to the pilot bearing. Remove the transmission. | |
