LIGHT TRUCK:
1995 WINDSTAR
ISSUE:
A "popping" noise may come from the front end of some vehicles when turning and/or going over bumps. This may be caused by stones getting lodged
between the lower spring insulator and the spring coil. Also, the upper strut mount ears contact the edge of the strut tower and "pop" as the bracket and
the strut tower flex in normal operation.
ACTION:
Trim the lower spring insulator and install a new upper strut mount. Trimming the lower spring insulator will reduce the possibility of stone entrapment
in the insulator. The upper strut mount has larger ears which will reduce the possibility of contact with the strut tower openings. Refer to the following
Service Procedure for details.
SERVICE PROCEDURE
1.
Remove the front strut as outlined in the 1995 Windstar Service Manual, Page 04-01-10.
2.
Trim the upper portion of the outer lip of the lower spring insulator so that it extends no higher than the centerline of the lowest coil of the spring.
Refer to Figure 1.
3.
Replace the upper strut mounting bracket with the new upper strut mounting bracket (F58Z-18183-A). Reinstall the front strut as outlined in the
1995 Windstar Service Manual, Page 04-01-11.
