Power Steering Pump: Symptom Related Diagnostic Procedures

Foaming, Milky P/S Fluid, Low Fluid Level and Low Pressure

This can be caused by air in the fluid and loss of fluid due to internal pump leakage causing overflow. Check for leaks and correct fluid level. Bleed
system. Extremely cold temperatures will cause air bubbles in system if fluid level is low. If fluid level is correct and pump still foams, remove pump
from vehicle and separate reservoir from housing. Check soft plug and housing for cracks. If housing is cracked, replace housing.

Low Pressure Due to Steering Pump

1. Inspect flow control valve for proper operation.
2. Inspect pressure plate for proper mating with cam ring.
3. Inspect cam ring for wear or damage.
4. Inspect pressure plate, thrust plate and rotor for wear or damage.
5. Inspect rotor slots for proper vane operation.
6. Inspect pump for high internal leakage.

Growling Noise

1. Inspect steering gear for restriction which causes excessive back pressure.
2. Inspect pressure plate, thrust plate or rotor for wear or damage.
3. Inspect cam ring for wear or damage.

Groaning Noise

1. Inspect hydraulic system for air in lines or reservoir.
2. Inspect fluid level.
3. Inspect pump mounting for proper and secure installation.

Rattling Noise

1. Inspect rotor slots for proper vane operation.
2. Inspect vane for proper installation.

Swishing Noise

1. Inspect flow control valve for damage.

Whining Noise

1. Inspect pump shaft bearing for damage.
2. Inspect pressure plate and vanes for damage.
