Timing Belt: Service and Repair
REMOVAL
1.
Remove water pump pulley and drive belt.
2.
Remove timing belt cover.
3.
Move timing belt tensioner fully toward water pump and secure in place.
4.
Remove timing belt from camshaft sprocket.
5.
Remove camshaft sprocket retaining bolt, then the sprocket.
6.
Remove crankshaft pulley.
7.
Remove timing belt. If belt is to be reused, scribe an arrow on belt indicating rotation for later installation.
8.
Remove crankshaft sprocket retaining bolt, then the sprocket and flange.
9.
Remove timing belt tensioner.

INSTALLATION
1.
Install flange and crankshaft sprocket as shown in Fig. 6, then torque sprocket bolt to 37-43 ft. lbs. on 1985-86 models and 51-72 ft. lbs. on 1988
models.
2.
Install camshaft sprocket and torque bolt to 47-54 ft. lbs.

Align crankshaft and camshaft timing marks as shown, Fig. 4.
4.
Install timing belt tensioner as follows:
a. Mount tensioner, spring and spacer, then temporarily tighten attaching bolt.
b. Temporarily tighten the tensioner long hole side washer and bolt, then install bottom end of spring into front case.
c. Secure tensioner to a position nearest water pump.
5.
Install timing belt onto crankshaft and camshaft sprockets.
6.
With timing belt installed, ensure that tension side is tight and all timing marks are aligned when camshaft sprocket is rotated in reverse direction.
7.
Install crankshaft pulley, ensuring that sprocket pin engages hole in pulley. Torque pulley attaching bolts to 8 ft. lbs.
