11. Remove rack from left side of gear housing to prevent damage to bushing, Fig. 3.
Assembly
1. Using tool No. 09565-21000, or equivalent, and a suitable press, press bearing onto pinion, then install bearing retainer snap ring.
2. Apply suitable grease to rack, pinion, housing bushing, roller bearing and all sliding surfaces. Ensure air passage in housing bushing is not
blocked with grease before continuing assembly procedure.
3. Insert rack into gear housing from left side, then install and mesh pinion gear with rack teeth. Wipe away excessive grease.
4. Select and install snap ring which will minimize pinion endplay. Snap rings are available in 0.063 inch (blue), 0.066 inch (white) and 0.069 inch
(yellow) thicknesses.
5. Apply suitable grease to seal lips, then install new oil seal into gear housing.
6. Apply suitable grease to cupped portion of support yoke, then install yoke, cushion rubber, spring and yoke plug into gearbox.
7. Position rack in neutral (straight ahead) position. Using tool No. 09565-21100, or equivalent, torque yoke plug to 5-11 ft. lbs., then back off
adjustment 30-60°.
8. Apply sealer to yoke plug locknut, then install locknut and tighten to specifications.
9. Install tie rods and tighten to specifications, then stake rack keyway with suitable punch. Install bellows.
10. Measure pinion preload and rack starting force as follows:
a. Using tool No. 09565-11000, or equivalent, measure pinion preload over full stroke of rack. Turn pinion at a rate of one revolution for every
four to six seconds. Preload should be 0.3-0.8 ft. lbs.
b. Using tool mentioned above and a suitable spring scale, measure rack starting force. Starting force should be 11-66 lbs.
11. If pinion preload and rack starting force are not within specification, replace cushion rubber and yoke spring, then repeat steps for establishing
correct preload.
