Raise the vehicle and disconnect the terminal cord connector B209 (see Figure 1).

Check the continuity between pin # 6 and ground (transfer case body). See Figure 1.
A.
If the continuity is above 3.4 ohms or the circuit is open, proceed with step 5.
B.
If the continuity is within 3.0 - 3.4 ohms, look for other causes of the incident.
5.
Record the radio station pre-sets.
6.
Remove the negative cable from the battery.
7.
Drain the transfer case fluid into a suitable container.
8.
Remove the transfer case assembly from the vehicle (refer to page TF-84 of the 1998 QX4 Service Manual or page TF-95 of the 1999 QX4
Service Manual).
9.
Separate the front case from the center case (refer to page TF-88 of the 1998 QX4 Service Manual or page TF-99 of the 1999 QX4 Service
Manual).
10.
Remove the front drive shaft and drive chain (refer to page TF-90 of the 1998 QX4 Service Manual or page TF-101 of the 1999 QX4 Service
Manual).
11.
Remove two bolts and remove the oil strainer (see Figure 2).
12.
Remove the O-rings from the oil strainer and replace them with new ones (refer to the Parts Information table for the O-ring P/N).
