SYMPTOM/CONDITION
Some 1987/88 Jeep vehicles equipped with the heavy duty (Spicer Model 44) rear axles built before axle date code 418XX may experience an axle
lubricant leak between the brake support plate and the axle shaft mounting flange. This leak may be the result of the axle tube seal bore being at the
upper limits of the bore specification.
NOTE:
THE AXLE ASSEMBLY DATE CODE IS LOCATED ON THE REAR SIDE OF THE RIGHT SIDE AXLE TUBE. IT MAY BE
NECESSARY TO CLEAN THE REAR OF THE TUBE TO READ THE DATE CODE.
DIAGNOSIS
Raise rear of vehicle. Inspect for leakage on the back of the brake support plate between the axle shaft mounting flange and brake support plate. If
leakage is evident perform the following repair procedure.
