2. Remove steering wheel, then pry off lock plate cover with suitable tool.
3. Remove tilt lever.
4. Press hazard warning knob inward, turn counterclockwise and remove from column.
5. Using tool J-23653-A or equivalent, compress lock plate, then remove snap ring from steering shaft groove.
6. Remove lock plate, canceling cam, upper bearing preload spring, spring seat and bearing race.
7. Working from lower right side of steering column jacket, disconnect turn signal switch wire harness connector from mounting bracket. Wrap tape

around connector to prevent snagging during removal.

8. Remove wire harness plastic protector from column jacket.
9. Remove turn signal switch retaining screws and actuator, pull switch upward, then remove switch and harness from column.

10. Remove any additional harnesses from column.
11. Insert ignition key, then turn lock cylinder to "On" position.
12. Using suitable pliers, remove key warning buzzer and contacts as an assembly. Attempting to remove buzzer and contacts separately, may

result in contacts falling into column assembly.

13. Turn ignition key to "Lock" position, compress lock cylinder retaining tab, then remove lock cylinder from column.
14. Remove ignition and dimmer switches, then the column cover retaining screws and cover.
15. Remove upper bearing race and seat from steering shaft, then reinstall tilt lever and place column in full upward tilt position.
16. Using suitable screwdriver, press tilt spring retainer inward and rotate counterclockwise until retainer tabs align with housing lugs. Remove tilt

spring guide and retainer. Tilt spring guide is under strong spring tension. Use care when removing guide and retainer from column to
avoid injury.

17. Place column housing in center (non-tilt) position, then remove housing pivot pins using tool J-21854-1 or equivalent.
18. Raise tilt lever, disengage lock shoes, then remove column housing by turning clockwise until lock rack separates from remote rod.
19. Remove tilt lever and lever shield from housing.
20. Remove lock sector spring retaining screw, rotate spring clockwise to disengage from bolt, then remove spring, retaining ring, lock sector and

sector shaft.

21. Remove lock bolt, lock rack, rack preload spring, spring shim (if applicable) and remote rod from housing.
22. Insert a wedge between lock shoes and housing to relieve spring tension, then drive tilt lever pin from housing using a suitable punch.
23. Drive lock shoe pin from housing using suitable punch, then remove lock shoes, springs and wedge installed in previous step.
24. If necessary, remove upper and lower bearings and races from housing.
25. Remove steering shaft through upper end of column, then separate upper and lower halves by folding shaft at flexible joint.
26. Remove support attaching bolts, then the support.
27. Tip upper end of retainer plate rearward, then rotate plate counterclockwise and remove from column.
28. Using twisting motion, remove shroud from column jacket.
29. Remove key release lever and spring from shroud, if equipped.
30. Remove snap ring, retainer and bearing assembly from lower end of column.

ASSEMBLY

1. Lubricate all bearing, friction and thrust surfaces with suitable grease.
2. Install bearing assembly, retainer and snap ring onto lower end of column.
3. If equipped, install key release lever and spring into shroud, then align and install shroud onto column jacket. Install retainer plate.
4. Align column jacket "V" notch with corresponding "V" on column support, then install support into column.
5. Install column support retaining bolts, then torque bolts alternately to 60 inch lbs.
6. Install remote rod into support by guiding rod through upper end of shroud and inserting into slot in support.
7. Install steering shaft into column.
8. If removed during disassembly, install new bearings and races into housing.
9. Install lock shoes and springs into housing, align shoes, then install lock shoe pin.

10. Install release lever and lever spring into housing, insert wedges between housing and lever to relieve spring tension, then install lever pin.
11. Using suitable punch, gently tap sector shaft into housing.
12. Position lock sector onto sector shaft, then drive into place until snap ring groove on shaft is exposed. Install snap ring.
13. Install lock bolt into housing, ensuring bolt properly engages with lock sector cam surface.
14. Install lock rack, rack preload spring and replacement shim (if applicable) into housing. Square block tooth of rack must engage block tooth of

sector.

15. Install lock spring and retaining screw, then torque retaining screw to 35 inch lbs.
16. Align and install assembled housing onto support. Hold lock shoes in disengaged position to facilitate installation.
17. Align pivot pin holes in housing with holes in support, then install pivot pins. Press downward on housing until pins are engaged in both housing

and support, then fully seat pins with suitable punch.

18. Install tilt lever into housing, then position housing in full upward tilt position.
19. Lubricate tilt guide and spring with suitable grease, then install spring onto guide.
20. Install tilt spring and guide assembly into housing, then engage retainer lock tabs with housing lugs by pressing retainer downward and rotating

counterclockwise.

21. Install tilt lever shield, then remove tilt lever.
22. Install cover onto housing. Torque attaching screws to 60 inch lbs.
23. Install ignition buzzer switch and contacts, then the wiper switch. Ensure wiper switch wire harness is correctly routed down column.
24. Guide turn signal switch harness and connector through column and install switch into housing. Do not install switch retaining screws at this time.
25. Install knob onto hazard warning switch, then install turn signal switch retaining screws and torque to 35 inch lbs.
26. Install upper bearing race, seat, upper bearing preload spring, canceling cam and lock plate into housing.
