Loud HVAC Fan Sound Due To Body Insulation Restricting Fresh Air Inlet Opening
OVERVIEW:
This bulletin involves inspecting the fresh air inlet opening to the HVAC for possible restriction due to the foam sound insulation pad.

SYMPTOM/CONDITION:
The customer may notice that the sound of the HVAC fan motor is louder than normal.
This condition may be most noticeable when the HVAC fan motor is operating at HIGH (maximum) speed.
This condition may be due to a restriction in the HVAC fresh air inlet opening. The restriction may be due to the interior bulkhead foam sound insulation
pad. The sound insulation pad may have been trapped between the body and HVAC unit air inlet opening during the vehicle assembly process.
DIAGNOSIS:
If the sound of the HVAC fan motor is louder than normal when operating at the HIGH speed setting, perform the Repair Procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE:
1.
Set the HVAC system and fan motor to the OFF position. Turn the ignition switch to the OFF position.
2.
Raise vehicle hood.
3.
Remove the hood-to-plenum weatherstrip.
4.
Remove the plastic cowl/plenum cover.
5.
Remove the plastic air inlet baffle from the cowl trough.
6.
Inspect the fresh air inlet opening for restriction.
7.
Remove (cut away) any restriction to the fresh air inlet opening caused by the interior bulkhead sound insulation pad.
8.
Verify that the HVAC fan motor and fresh air inlet door operate correctly. Verify that the fan motor sound level has been corrected.
9.
If the condition has been corrected reassemble the vehicle and return to customer.
10.
If the condition has not been corrected then the HVAC fan motor will require removal to clear the fan of any remaining sound insulation pad
material.
11.
Disconnect and isolate the vehicle negative battery cable from the battery.
12.
From inside vehicle, remove the glove box and hush panel below the glove box.
13.
Disconnect the HVAC fan motor electrical connector from the wire harness.
14.
Remove the three (3) HVAC fan motor attaching screws (1-20 torx) and fan motor.
15.
Remove any sound insulation pad material from the fan.
16.
Inspect the fresh air inlet opening and the HVAC housing for any remaining sound insulation pad material.
