Alignment: Service and Repair
Suspension Inspection

Front

CAUTION:  Do not attempt to adjust the wheel alignment without first making a preliminary inspection of the front end parts and correcting where
necessary.

PRIOR TO INSPECTION:

-

Fill all fluids to specification.

Make sure spare tire or wheel and related equipment are properly stored.

Remove any excessive accumulation of mud, dirt or road deposits from the chassis, wheels and underbody.

Retain all normal loads in the vehicle. Inflate all tires to the recommended pressure.

Check both front tires and make sure they are the correct size.

INSPECTION

1. Check for excessive front wheel bearing end play.
2. Check for worn or damaged lower ball joints.
2. Check for worn or damaged upper ball joints.
3. Check for worn or damaged steering components.
4. Check the action of the front spring and shock absorber and the condition of their attachments.
5. Check the steering gear mounting bolts and tighten to the specified torque.
5. Check other suspension components for damage.

Rear

At regular intervals, the following rear suspension checks should be made:
1. Check for evidence of fluid leaks on rear shock strut. (A light film of fluid is permissible. Verify fluid is not from other sources.)
2. Check rear shock absorber operation.
3. Check condition of rear suspension arms and bushings.
4. Check condition of rear suspension compensator links.
5. Replace any damaged or worn components.
