Inspect the HLA contact tip (the surface that rides on the valve stem) for an "X" pattern or round peened surface. If either exists, replace the HLA.
If an "hour glass" polished wear pattern (normal) exists, do not replace the HLA.

Using a micrometer or calipers, measure the of the HLA. If it measures less than 20.5 mm, replace it.
NOTE:
Replace only the HLAs that fail one of these tests.
