PING/CREAK NOISE WHEN TRANSMISSION IS ENGAGED/TORQUE APPLIED
APPLICABLE MODEL(S)/VINS
All 1998-99 B-Series 4WD.
DESCRIPTION
A "ping" or "creak" noise may be heard from the driveline when the engine torque is initially applied to it. This may occur when shifting from PARK to
DRIVE or REVERSE, or between DRIVE and REVERSE. The noise may also be heard on slight to moderate acceleration from the stop position (A/T
models), or at clutch release (M/T models). This noise is caused by the clearance between the splines of the rear output flange (yoke) and the output
shaft. A modified transfer case output flange is available to resolve this concern.
Customers having this concern should have their vehicle repaired using the following procedure.
REPAIR PROCEDURE
1.
Verify concern.
2.
Mark the propeller shaft flange and rear axle output flange for correct alignment during installation.
3.
Remove the propeller shaft assembly.
4.
Remove transfer case output flange; see Workshop Manual.
5.
Wipe the output shaft splines with a clean shop cloth (use Brake Cleaner Solvent or other suitable solvent).
