Reverse numbered sequence shown in Fig. 14, noting the following:
1.
Install new O-ring and seal ring to rack's piston.
2.
Install new oil seal and inner guide on guide tool Nos. 49 B032 318 and 49 B032 319 or equivalent.
3.
Place oil seal and inner guide at edge of steering rack pinion then remove tools.
4.
After mounting steering rack to gear housing, install oil seal and inner guide in correct position. When installing, do not apply a load of more
than 4266 psi or damaged to the oil seal and inner guide will occur.
5.
Apply grease to new U gasket and O-ring.
6.
Install U gasket and O-ring into outer box, then tighten outer box to specification.
7.
Perform air tightness check as follows:
a. Install adapter and vacuum tool Nos. 49 B032 321 and 49 B032 317 or equivalent to cylinder of gear housing.
b. Apply 17.7 inches of vacuum and ensure vacuum is maintained for 30 seconds.
c. If vacuum does not hold, replace oil seal.
8.
Using bearing installation tool Nos. 49 G032 797, 49 B032 309 and 49 B032 310 or equivalent install upper and lower oil seal and bearing.
9.
Using seal protector tool Nos. 49 B032 312 and 49 B032 314 or equivalent, install a new seal ring on pinion shaft and then seat seal.
10.
Install pinion shaft assembly into gear housing using seal protector tool No. 40 B032 311 or equivalent.
11.
Temporarily install tie rod on tube side of rack.
12.
Invert housing and install locknut on pinion shaft and tighten to specification.
13.
Apply thread sealant to housing cover prior to installation.
14.
Stake cover at two points.
15.
Support rack in a vise with support yoke faces upward.
16.
Apply grease to rack sliding surface then install it in housing.
