Fuel Injector: Description and Operation
Fuel Rails And Injectors
PURPOSE
Provide for precise ECU controlled fuel delivery.
LOCATION
Fuel rail on the intake manifold.
OPERATION
Injectors are electrically operated solenoid valves that open when energized. They get battery power from the main relay when the engine is
cranking or running, and are energized when the ECU completes the circuit to ground. Injection timing and duration are determined by the ECU.
Injectors are energized either all at the same time once for each ignition pulse (engine cranking), or sequentially following the firing order (engine
running).
CONSTRUCTION
The injectors are constructed of materials to resist corrosion. They consist of a fuel inlet with filter screen, an electric solenoid and connector, and
a pintle valve and nozzle. They are installed in the fuel rail so that the nozzles protrude slightly into the manifold. They are sealed by O-rings and
held in place by a cover/harness connector fastened to the fuel rail with screws.
