Fuel Injector: Description and Operation
Fuel Injectors And Intake System Components
The Mazda rotary engine uses two pairs of injectors, a primary pair and a secondary pair. The primary injectors are located beneath the intake manifold
assembly, installed directly in the rotor housings. This pair of injectors provide fuel for the primary intake air passages. The secondary injectors are
installed in the intake manifold lower section, in the outermost (secondary) intake air passages.
A mixing plate is installed under the primary injectors and an air bleed socket is installed under the secondaries. Though they are called by different
names they serve the same purpose, to create a turbulent flow around the injectors for more efficient fuel atomization.
The injectors are electrically operated, high impedance solenoid valves that open when energized. They get battery power from the main relay when the
ignition is in the either the "START" or "RUN" position, and are energized when the ECU completes the circuit to ground. All injectors have their own
separate ground connection through the ECU and are energized individually. Injection timing and duration are determined by the engine control unit.
