M/T - Clicking/Rattling in 2nd Gear

TRANSMISSION - MANUAL T-5 OVERDRIVE - CLICK/RATTLE NOISE IN SECOND GEAR UNDER A LOAD

FORD 1983-1/2 MUSTANG, T-BIRD 2.3L EFI TURBO CHARGED/5.0L ENGINE

LINCOLN-MERCURY 1983-1/2 CAPRI 5.0L ENGINE

Concerns of clicking and/or rattling in 2nd gear under a load may be caused by the 5th/reverse gearshift lever return spring not being secured at both
ends.

Refer to the 1984 Car Shop Manual, Section 16-32, for removal and installation procedures of the transmission assembly. The following is the service
procedure to be used to connect the 5th/reverse gearshift lever return spring.

1.

Mount transmission in Bench Mounted Holding Fixture T57L-500-B, or equivalent.

2.

Using a 3/8-inch drive ratchet and extension, remove drain plug located on lower right side of transmission case.

3.

Using a 13 mm socket, position shift lever in neutral position and remove turret cover attaching bolts.

4.

Using a suitable pry bar, break turret cover to extension housing seal by prying carefully between housing and cover. Remove turret cover.

5.

Using a 5 mm (3/16-inch) pin punch and hammer remove roll pin attaching offset lever to shifter shaft.

CAUTION: DO NOT ATTEMPT TO REMOVE THE OFFSET LEVER WHILE THE EXTENSION HOUSING IS BOLTED IN PLACE. A LUG,

LOCATED ON THE BOTTOM OF THE OFFSET LEVER, MESHES WITH THE DETENT PLATE PREVENTING ENOUGH
REARWARD MOVEMENT OF THE OFFSET LEVER TO ALLOW REMOVAL.

6.

Using a 15 mm socket, remove extension housing attaching bolts.

7.

Using a suitable pry bar, break extension housing to case seal by prying carefully between housing and case.

8.

Remove extension housing and offset lever as an assembly by sliding rearward away from case.

9.

Remove offset lever, roll pin, detent spring and de- 

tent ball from extension housing detent plate.
10.

Using a 10 mm socket, remove cover attaching bolts.

11.

Using a suitable pry bar, break cover to case seal by prying carefully between cover and case.

12.

To remove shift cover, lift it slightly and slide to filler plug side of transmission. When shift mechanism clears groove in 5th/reverse shift lever,
continue lifting cover.

13.

Using long needle nose pliers, remove C-clip attaching 5th/reverse shift lever to lever pivot pin.

14.

Using a 21 mm wrench, remove shift lever pivot pin.

NOTE:

Do not remove the 5th/reverse shift lever.

15.

Using needle nose pliers, connect the lever return spring.

16.

Apply Pipe Sealant or equivalent to the pivot pin threads and install the 5th/reverse shift lever pivot pin.

NOTE:

Before installing the pivot pin, make sure the reverse shift fork pin and 5th gear shift rail pin are engaged with the shift lever.

17.

Using needle nose pliers, install C-clip on shift lever pivot pin.

18.

Apply 1/8 inch bead of silicone sealer to shift cover assembly and install. Position cover to filler plug side of transmission and lower into position
until shift forks engage synchronizers. Continue lowering cover and move into position to engage 5th/reverse shift lever.

NOTE:

Make sure all synchronizers are in the neutral position and that the shift forks in the cover are in the neutral position.

19.

Install shift cover attaching bolts. Tighten cover attaching bolts to 8-15 N-m (6-11 ft.lbs.).

20.

Apply a 1/8-inch bead of silicone sealer on the extension housing mating surface.

21.

Coat detent spring with petroleum jelly and install in offset lever. Lubricate detent plate and install detent ball in neutral position on plate. Position
offset lever in extension housing with spring over detent ball.

22.

Slide lever and extension housing into position as an assembly.

23.

Press downward on offset lever to compress detent spring and push lever and housing into position.

24.

Install extension housing attaching bolts and tighten to 27-61 N-m (20-45 ft.lbs.).

25.

Using a 5 mm (3/16-inch) pin punch, align the hole in shifter shaft with hold in offset lever and install roll pin.

Install damper sleeve in offset lever.

NOTE:

Output shaft geartrain end play must be checked and adjusted at this point.

26.

Apply a 1/8-inch bead of silicone sealer on the turret cover.

27.

Position turret cover on the extension housing and install the attaching bolts to 15-20 N-m (11-15 ft.lbs.).

28.

Install and tighten drain plug to 20-41 N-m (15-30 ft.lbs.).

29.

Refill transmission with 5 pints of Dexron II fluid.
