MANUAL TRANSMISSION FLUID LEAKAGE - TOP COVER BOLTS LOOSE

MERKUR 1985 XR4Ti

1985 Merkur XR4Ti vehicles equipped with manual transmission, may exhibit transmission fluid leakage caused by the transmission top cover attaching
bolts coming loose. This will allow transmission fluid to leak between the transmission top cover and the transmission housing. To effectively repair this
condition, install a new transmission top cover gasket using the new design bolts.

1.

Raise the vehicle on a suitable hoist.

2.

Remove the catalytic converter (refer to the Merkur XR4Ti Shop Manual, Section 26-02, page 3 for assistance).

3.

Remove the driveshaft center support attaching bolts and let the driveshaft hang down (do not remove the driveshaft from the vehicle).

4.

Support the transmission with a suitable transmission jack.

5.

Remove the bolt attaching the rear mount to the transmission.

6.

Remove the (4) bolts attaching the rear mount to the body and remove the mount.

7.

Loosen the engine mount attaching nuts until two or three threads are visible on the ends of the bolts.

8.

Lower the engine and transmission assembly by use of the transmission support jack until sufficient clearance is obtained to remove the
transmission top cover bolts.

9.

Remove and discard the (10) transmission top cover bolts.

10.

Remove the top cover and discard the gasket and replace with new gasket, part number E5RY-7223-
A.

Apply a thin coat of gasket seal contact adhesive (D7AZ-19B508-A) or equivalent to hold gasket to cover.

11.

Secure the transmission top cover to the transmission housing with new attaching bolts, part number E800399-S200.

12.

Torque the attaching bolts to 18-20 N-m (120 in.lbs.).

13.

Fill the transmission to the bottom of the filler hole with semi-synthetic oil, E5RY-19C547-A.

NOTE:

If a replacement transmission assembly is to be installed in the vehicle, verify the top cover attaching bolts are torqued to specification.
