Axle Shaft: Service and Repair
Removal
1. Raise and support rear of vehicle, then remove rear wheel and brake drum and disconnect brake hose from wheel cylinder.

2. Disconnect bearing case from axle housing end, Fig. 3.
3. Remove brake backing plate, if equipped, bearing case, and axle shaft as an assembly, using slide hammer and adapter tool, No. MB990211-01
and axle puller tool, No. MB990241-01 or equivalent, to remove axle shaft if necessary.
4. Remove O-ring and wheel bearing preload shims.
5. Using slide hammer and adapter tool, No. MB990211-01 and seal removal tool, No. MB990212 or equivalent, remove oil seal.
6. Proceed as follows:
a. Remove one backing plate retaining bolt.
b. Push bearing case down to expose bearing retainer.
c. Apply protective tape on bearing case.
