NOTE:

It is normal to have discoloration on the bore of the pinion housing to match the four teflon sealing rings on the pinion. Do not replace the
gear because of these discolorations.

CAUTION: The condition of the sealing surfaces of the rack is critical.

Figure 16 is a cross-section drawing of the steering gear and the location of the oil seals. The sealing surfaces of the rack are ONLY those surfaces
that pass through the oil seals as the rack moves from left lock to right lock, extending 7" on either side of the piston. The area on the back side of
the rack, opposite the gear teeth, is NOT a sealing surface. Scratches, score marks or discolorations in that area will not affect the sealing
performance of the gear.

Hold the clean, dry rack under a bright light and examine the surface of the rack shaft within 7 inches of the piston. Look for score marks, scratches
or corrosion pitting along the length of the shaft. Hold your thumbnail against the shaft while rotating the rack. Let your thumbnail trace a spiral
path along the shaft. If you can feel any imperfections with a fingernail, the rack cannot be used.
NOTE:

There may be some discoloration on the back side of the rack opposite the gear teeth. This is normal and does not affect the sealing ability
of the rack. DO NOT replace the steering gear because of this discoloration.

NOTE:

If you are installing a new rack and inner tube assembly, skip steps 1 thru 7 and go directly to step 8.

There is a small piece of mylar film included in the rebuild seal kit. This should be used to install the first oil seal onto the rack.

Form the piece of film into a ring and slide it into the center of the oil seal (Figure 17). Make sure the mylar overlaps itself.

Carefully slide the film and seal onto the rack, while keeping the oil seal at the middle of the film and the spring-side of the seal toward the rack
piston (Figure 18). After the seal and film have passed over the rack teeth, slide the seal off the film.
