Fast Idle Control Device (F.I.C.D.): Description and Operation
Idle-Up Solenoid
Throttle Body (Exploded View)
The idle-up solenoid, located on the base of the throttle chamber, is a small electrical solenoid that when energized moves a plunger. It is used to
raise the idle speed when an additional load is placed on the engine. When the ECU senses conditions necessary for an increase in idle speed, it
energizes the FICD solenoid (located on the throttle chamber). This opens an air passage that allows an additional amount of air to by-pass the
throttle plate, raising the idle speed.
Under the following conditions the solenoid is activated:
^
During starting.
^
For a few seconds after start.
^
For a few minutes after starting the engine if the battery voltage is below 12 volts.
^
P/S load switch is closed.
^
Lighting switch is on.
^
Blower motor switch is on.
^
Rear defogger switch is on.
