Camshaft: Service and Repair

Removal

1.

Remove in order: timing belt, battery, distributor cap and wires, cam cover with gasket, lubrication pipe, distributor and bolt.

2.

Remove flange (3), Fig. 75. Lock camshaft at A using pin tool No. 0-0163 or equivalent.

3.

Remove bolt (4), camshaft pinion, and plate (5).

4.

Loosen each of the bearing cap securing nuts, then remove each bearing cap, oil seal and the camshaft.

Installation

1.

Ensure crankshaft is in proper position for pin insertion.

2.

Install No. 2, 3, and 4 bearing cap, in this order and hand tighten first.

3.

Replace side gasket, coating both side of gasket and mating surface with gasket cement.

4.

Install No. 1 bearing cap, then tighten each of the caps to specifications. Check valve clearance. If clearance is within specifications, install bolt,
flange and new oil seal (6), using installation tool No. 0153 or equivalent. Fig. 76.

5.

Install and secure plate (5) using pin tool No. 0-0163 or equivalent, to centralize, then install camshaft pinion.

6.

Install pin tool No. 0-0163, or equivalent, at position (a), Fig. 77, then tighten camshaft pinion bolt to specifications.

7.

Install lubrication pipe, cam cover, distributor cap and wires and timing belt.
