Engine Control Module: Description and Operation

DME Control Unit

The engine electronics are controlled by the DME control unit, the processor of which processes the previously digitized analog signals from the various
system components. The processor speed, i.e. the cycle time of the processor, was increased to 16 MHz. Furthermore, the Boxster's control unit now has
a total storage capacity of 144 KB.
The DME control unit is installed in the rear luggage compartment against the panel between the luggage compartment and the engine compartment
(direction of travel: left).

Note:
With vehicles whose control unit is programmed for operation with an oxygen sensing system and catalytic converter, adaptation of the air/fuel mixture
takes place when the engine is running. This means that the control unit together with the oxygen sensing system compensates deviations from the
programmed injection precontrol by correcting the injection period.
As a result, engine-specific tolerances are corrected when the mixture is being produced. Adaptation of the fuel/air mixture also means that it is not
necessary to adjust the idle CO to a basic setting.

If used in combination with the new Porsche System Tester 2, it is now possible to change, expand, or complete certain data externally via the diagnosis
socket.

When the control unit has finished processing, setting elements in the engine such as ignition stages, injection valves etc. are then activated by the control
unit.

Furthermore, when the engine has been switched off, the control unit continues to run depending on the current engine compartment temperature. This
means that the control unit is supplied with power via the DME relay and terminal 54 for a programmed time after terminal 15 has been deactivated. The
engine compartment cooling fan may switch on during this time.
