Diagnostic trouble code P0638 and/or P1682, dislodged pins in H42-2

Background

Diagnostic trouble code P0638 and/or P1682 can be indicated despite the fault being located elsewhere than indicated by fault diagnosis. Several 
electronic throttle actuators have been replaced unnecessarily when the fault is dislodged pins in connector H42-2.

For this reason, H42-2 must be checked with regard to dislodged pins before the electronic throttle actuator is replaced. In particular, check the pins
which are connected to the accelerator pedal position sensor (pins 13, 14, 17, 18, 19 and 20 in H42-2).

In the case of customer complaint the following procedure must first be carried out.

Symptom description

Diagnostic trouble code P0638 and/or P1682 are/is indicated.

Procedure

1.

Read off the car's diagnostic trouble codes.

2.

Remove the battery cover.
