Flexible Plastic Parts
FLEXIBLE PLASTIC PARTS
All exterior flexible plastic parts used on Saturn automobiles are a thermoplastic olefin (TPO) compound. Refinishing requires the use of flexible
additives in the primer surfacer and clear coat. Flex additives need not be used in the basecoat. Additionally, 3M(R) Polyolefin Adhesion Promoter P/N
5907 or D820 (or equivalent) must be used over all bare surfaces.

PAINT CONDITIONS AND REPAIR
Saturn automobiles are finished with a basecoat/clearcoat paint system. This process consists of an immersion primer on all steel and space frame
components, a spray-on primer on all composite panels, and a high solid water borne basecoat and catalyzed urethane clearcoat.
Spot Repair and Blending
SPOT REPAIR AND BLENDING
Basecoat/clearcoat finishes offer opportunities to readily blend and match colors. This blending is achieved in the basecoat stage. Providing the repair
does not extend to the edge of the panel, blending of adjacent panels is not required to achieve a match. Due to Saturn's unique body construction and the
absence of a sail panel joining the roof and quarter, it will not be necessary to blend in the top coat. All clearcoating can be accomplished on a panel by
panel basis depending on the repair.
Steel and Rigid Plastic Parts
STEEL AND RIGID PLASTIC PARTS
The refinish process is the same for steel and rigid plastic parts, flexible additives are not required for use on acrylonltrite/butadine styrene and
polycarbonate (ABS + PC) or polyamide, polyphene ether
(PA + PPE) and sheet molded compound (SMC) materials as long as OEM equivalent acrylic urethane top coats are used.

REFINISH MATERIALS APPROVED FOR USE TO REPAIR SATURN VEHICLES
General Motors has established standards for paint refinishing. Saturn requires the Standard GM49OIM when repairing, replacing, or refinishing
vehicles. This standard is found in the "Saturn Engineering Specifications Manual." All paint finish repairs, including sublets, are to meet GM Standards.
Claims for paint finish repairs using materials or methods that do not meet standard may be subject to debit.
