Removing
Removing
–  Disconnect the battery earth strap.
  Note
Observe the measures to be adopted when disconnecting the battery → Rep. Gr.27.
  Note
For vehicles fitted with a coded radio, first check the anti-theft code
–  Remove engine cover. → Booklet2
–  Remove air cleaner housing; gasoline engines → Rep. Gr.24 and diesel engines → Rep. Gr.23.
–  Remove the battery and the battery support: → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.27
   
–  Remove the connection cable along with the selection rod -2-, to do this release the bolt -1-.
  Note
There are two types of transfer levers: plastic and metal.
Metal idler rod
–  Fit the idler rod → Chapter
Plastic idler rod:
–  Fit the idler rod → Chapter
Continuation for all versions

–  Detach bracket on shift control cable and selector control cable on transmission housing. For this purpose unscrew bolts -1-.
–  Remove the pipes -3- from the bracket -4-.
–  Remove the bracket -4- for the pipes from the gearbox.
–  Remove the slave cylinder from the gearbox casing by extracting the bolts -5-.
  Note
Do not depress the brake pedal.

–  Disconnect the connector -arrow 1- from the starter motor and the connector -arrow 2- from the brake light switch.
–  Lever off the protection cover and unscrew the cable -arrow 3- from the starter motor.

–  Extract the connector -arrow- from the speedometer sender, for those vehicles fitted with this.
–  Remove the upper attachment bolts between the engine/gearbox.
–  Extract the upper starter securing bolt.
–  Raise the vehicle and remove the left front wheel.
–  If installed, remove damping tub → Body - outer assembly work; Rep. Gr.50

–  Unscrew the bracket -arrow- from the starter motor and put it to one side along with the cables.
–  Remove the starter motor: → Electrical system; Rep. Gr.27
–  Remove left front wheel well shell → Body - outer assembly work; Rep. Gr.66
–  Remove the thermal plate for the inner right hand side constant speed joint.

–  Remove the pendulum support -arrows 1 and 2-.
–  Release and secure the driveshafts → Running gear - front-wheel drive; Rep. Gr.40.

–  Remove the support for the engine cover on the left hand side engine securing ring -arrow-.
–  Unscrew both fuel pressure pipe brackets located on the cylinder head.

–  Fit the support stand -U 30025E-.
  Note
t  Fit the supporting equipment so that it is seated correctly on the hardest parts of the wing water drains and will not cause any damage.
t  Ensure that the pipe connections and the cables in the area where the engine is suspended do not suffer any damage while fitting the hooks of the support equipment.
–  Slightly tense the engine assembly/gearbox via the spindles.

–  Extract the attachment bolts -arrows- for the gearbox socket.
–  Lower the engine assembly/gearbox using the spindle of the support stand -U 30025E-.
  Note
When lowering the engine assembly/gearbox ensure that the gearbox does not rest on the subframe.

–  Remove transmission console -A-. For this purpose unscrew mounting bolts -arrows-.

–  Place support tool -T20138B- on base -T20145-, and fit to the hydraulic jack -SAT 1040-.
–  Extract the lower attachment bolts from the engine/gearbox.
–  Move the engine assembly forwards and insert a wooden wedge between the subframe and the engine.
–  Release the gearbox from the centre guide sockets and rotate it towards the subframe by operating the spindles of the support tool -T20138B-.
–  Lower the gearbox very carefully.
–  Connect the gearbox to a stand.
