Selector lever control cable: removing and fitting
Consult the equivalence table for tools and equipment according to applicability among Seat / VW / Audi / Skoda → Chapter.
Special tools and workshop equipment required

Selector lever control cable: removing
  Note
t  Cleaning norms when working in the gearbox → Chapter.
t  General repair instructions. → Chapter
  Note
All cable clamps that become loose or cut when removing must be re-installed in the same place when installing.
–  Remove engine cover → Booklet101.
–  Remove the air filter body, breather hose and air duct hoses → Rep. gr.24 and → Rep. gr.23 .

–  Release the selector lever control cable -1- from the selection shaft lever -3-, use, e.g. a 10 mm spanner -Position 2-.
–  Remove the control cable from the counter support by pressing the tabs -arrows-.

–  Release the selector lever control cable from the -1- from the gearbox on the hook -arrow- taking care not to bend the selector lever control cable.

–  Remove right and left hand side vehicle floor cover -arrows-.

–  Unscrew the bracket for the exhaust system -arrows- along with the bracket for the lambda probe -1-.

–  Remove the front tunnel bridge -arrows-.

–  Release all of the cables from the heat shield -arrows A-.
–  Open the cable clamp -arrow B-.

–  Remove the rear tunnel of the bridge -1-.
–  Support the front part of the exhaust system, at the level of the catalytic converter, using the hydraulic jack -SAT 1040-.
  Note
The connecting elements of the front exhaust pipe must not be bent more than 30º. Risk of damage!
–  Remove the exhaust system by the surrounding sleeve -arrows-.
  Note
A second mechanic is required for removing the rear part of the exhaust system.
–  Take the rear silencer -2- off mountings and remove the rear part of the exhaust system.

–  Lower the exhaust system slightly using the hydraulic jack -SAT 1040-. Ensure that there is enough space for the lambda probe cables.
–  Remove the attachments -arrows- and extract the heat shield towards the rear.
–  Put the gear selector lever into position „S“.

–  Remove the lower cover of the gear selection mechanism -arrows-.
–  Slide the cover and the protective sheath over the selector lever cable forward. The protective sheath must not be damaged.

–  Unscrew bolts -arrows-.
  WARNING
The printed circuit board -B- of the gear selection mechanism should not in any case be touched with fingers, as the electrical components of the circuit may be damaged beyond repair due to static discharge.
The printed circuit board may only be replaced with the gear selection mechanism.
–  Remove the insertion plate -A- from the gear selection mechanism.
  Note
The insertion plate is held in place on the left and right with clips.

–  Pull retaining clip downwards -1- from selector lever control cable in the gear selection mechanism.
–  Pull the plastic safety spring -2- slightly forwards and press the bolt -3- upwards only if necessary -arrow-.
  Note
Make sure the bolt does not come out completely.
–  Remove the selector lever cable -4- from the gear selection mechanism.
  Note
Do not bend or twist the selector lever cable.
Mount the selector lever control cable
Installation is carried out in reverse order, noting the following:
  Note
t  Ensure that the protection sheath of the gear selection lever is not damaged; this may only be changed along with the cable itself.
t  Ensure that the cover is correctly attached and is not twisted.
Tightening torques of the nuts and bolts as well as an indication as to they must be renewed or not → Chapter.

–  Insert the end of the selector lever cable -4- into the joint of the selector lever.
–  Press the bolt -3- downwards -arrow-.
–  Check whether the plastic safety spring -2- has engaged the bolt.
–  Position a new safety fastener -1- for the selector lever cable in the gear selection mechanism.
l  Installation position: The bent end of the retaining clip faces inwards towards the gear selection mechanism.

–  Fit the insertion plate -A-.
  Note
The insertion plate is held in place on the left and right with clips.
–  Fit bolts -arrows-.
  WARNING
The printed circuit board -B- of the gear selection mechanism should not in any case be touched with fingers, as the electrical components of the circuit may be damaged beyond repair due to static discharge.
The printed circuit board may only be replaced with the gear selection mechanism.
–  Shift selector lever into position „P“.
–  Screw in the cover with the glued joint, by hand, into the bracket assembly. When doing so, ensure that the joint is correctly seated.

–  Bolt the lower cover of the gear selection mechanism -arrows-.
–  Fit the protective sheath of the selector lever cable on the cover.

–  Move the selector shaft rod -3- all the way back from the gearbox to position „P“ (in the diagram, all the way to the right) until the parking lock is engaged. Both front wheels are locked (they cannot both turn in the same direction).

–  Hang the selector lever cable -1- on the clip -arrow- on the gearbox. When putting tension on the selector lever control cable, keep a distance of at least 5 mm from the ATF cooler.

–  Remove the bolt -2- located on the front selector cable guard -1-.
–  Carefully insert the gear selector lever cable into the counter support of the gearbox and on the selection shaft rod. While doing this, do not bend the rod of the selection shaft; otherwise the gear changes will not be precise.
–  Tighten bolt -2- to a torque of 13 Nm.
–  Move the selector lever from „P“ to „S“ and then return it to the initial position.
l  The gear actioning mechanism and the selector lever cable should move freely; if necessary, replace the selector lever cable or repair the gearbox actioning mechanism.
–  Fit the exhaust system and adjust without putting it under any strain → Engine, mechanics; Rep. gr. 26.
–  Fit the selector lever handle → Chapter.
–  Take all the necessary precautionary measures when connecting the battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr. 27.
–  Check selector mechanism → Chapter.
