Gear selection mechanism: removing and fitting Check the tool and equipment equivalence table according to the applicability between Seat / VW / Audi / Skoda → Chapter Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Hydraulic jack -SAT 1040-, see equivalent → Anchor Removal:

–  Remove shift knob together with cover → Chapter. –  Unscrew bolts -arrows C- and then pull ashtray -2- out of centre console. –  Unplug electrical connector for ashtray light. –  Remove foam rubber wedges from centre console. –  Remove soundproofing upward.

–  Unscrew soundproofing for selector housing -arrows-.

–  Unscrew nuts -arrows-.

–  Loosen bolts/quick release fasteners -1- and -2- and remove front soundproofing -A-.

–  If fitted, loosen quick release fasteners -3- and remove rear noise insulation -B-. –  Remove the exhaust system by the surrounding hose -2-.   Note The separating elements of the front exhaust pipes must not be bent more than 10, otherwise they could be damaged. –  Remove front lateral reinforcement on tunnel -1--arrows-. –  Remove heat shield from exhaust system -4- below shift actuation –  Place a wooden block between the engine and gearbox jack -SAT 1040- and the rear cross member of the tunnel. –  Support rear cross member of the tunnel using the engine and gearbox jack -SAT 1040-.

–  First remove bolts -1- and then bolts -2-. –  Carefully lower the rear cross member of the tunnel using the engine and gearbox jack -SAT 1040- until the distance between the rear cross member and the chassis has reached a height of approx. 60 mm.

–  Unscrew heat shield -arrow- for drive shaft (right side) and, if fitted, also for drive shaft (left-side).

–  Unscrew connecting rod -2- for selector rod. –  Remove pushrod -1-, for this purpose unscrew hex. head bolt.

–  Remove nut -arrow- and detach selector shaft lever from selector shaft. –  Remove selector mechanism to rear. Installation Installation is carried out in reverse order, noting the following:   Note Renew seals, gaskets and self-locking nuts. –  Install tunnel cross member → Running gear, front-wheel drive and four-wheel drive; Rep. gr. 40. –  Install and adjust the exhaust system free of stress → Rep. gr.26. –  Adjust selector mechanism → Chapter. Tightening torques
