Detaching Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Torque wrench -V.A.G 1331- –  First the vehicle should be checked if a coded radio is installed. If necessary obtain radio anti-theft code first. –  With ignition switched off, disconnect battery earth strap. → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27 –  Remove gaiter with gear knob → Chapter. –  If noise insulation is present, remove it. –  Remove front centre console → General body repairs, interior; Rep. gr.68.

–  Remove both nuts -1- and remove mounting bracket -2-. –  Remove both nuts -3- and remove mounting bracket -4-.

–  Remove complete air filter housing if it is over selector mechanism → Rep. gr.23 or → Rep. gr.24. Vehicles with petrol engines –  Remove cable support bracket from gearbox -arrows-.

Vehicles with turbo diesel engine –  Remove cable support bracket from gearbox -arrows-.

Continuation for all vehicles –  Remove securing clip -1- for gear selector cable from gearbox selector lever -2- and pull cable off pin -arrow-.

Releasing cable end-piece from gate selector cable l  To avoid damage to gate selector cable, separate cable end-piece from gate selector cable before removal. –  Pull locking mechanism forwards in direction of -arrow 1- onto stop and then turn to left in direction of -arrow 2- to lock. –  Then press relay lever forwards (in direction of -arrow 3-). –  Remove relay lever together with cable end-piece → Chapter –  Remove noise insulation → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50. –  Remove tunnel cross member → Rep. gr.26. –  Separate exhaust system at double clamp; unhook rear exhaust system and remove front heat shield → Rep. gr.26. –  Remove underbody panels → General body repairs, exterior; Rep. gr.50. –  Swing selector housing down and remove with selector cables.
