Self-diagnosis
Final control diagnosis

The final control diagnosis activates the following components in the stated sequence:

Injector, Cyl. 1 (N30)

2.

Injector, Cyl. 2 (N31)

3.

Injector, Cyl. 3 (N32)

4.

Injector, Cyl. 4 (N33)

5.

Injector, Cyl. 5 (N83)

6.

Injector, Cyl. 6 (N84)

7.

Idling speed stabilization valve (N71)

8.

Exhaust gas recirculation valve (N18), (two-way valve)

9.

Secondary air inlet valve (N112)

10.

Secondary air pump relay (J299)

Special tools, testers, measuring instruments and auxiliary items required

  • ◆ Fault reader V.A.G 1551 or vehicle system tester V.A.G 1552 with cable V.A.G 1551/3
  • ◆ Test box V.A.G 1598/18
  • ◆ Adapter set V.A.G 1594
  • ◆ Diode test lamp V.A.G 1527
  • ◆ Current flow diagram

Check conditions

  • ● Fuses No. 15, 18 and S130 OK.
  • ● Idling switch OK, checking ,
    checking throttle valve control part

Notes:

  • ◆ To activate the injectors the idling switch (in the throttle valve control part) must additionally be opened.
  • ◆ The final control diagnosis will via the Motronic control unit activate each injector 5 times.

Work sequence

  • ‒ Connect fault reader V.A.G 1551 (V.A.G 1552) and select engine electronics control unit (address word 01); carry out selection with ignition switched on.
 
→ Indicated on display:
Rapid data transfer    HELP
Select function XX
  • ‒ Operate fault reader taking into account the information on the display:
  • ‒ Input 03 for "Final control diagnosis" function.

03 Final control diagnosis

Activate Cyl. 1 injector (N30):

  • ‒ Confirm input with Q button.
 
→ Indicated on display:
Final control diagnosis    ⇒
Injector cylinder 1 -N30
  • ‒ Open throttle valve fully and close again.
        The Cyl. 1 injector must click

To activate injectors, Cyls. 2...6 in each case:

  • ‒ Open throttle valve fully again and close.

Skipping individual tests:

  • ‒ Press ⇒key.

If one or more injectors do not click:

  • ‒ Continue final control diagnosis to the end.
  • ‒ Switch off ignition.
  • ‒ Checking injector actuation (resistance and current supply) => Page 24-92, checking injectors.

Activate solenoid valve 1 for activated charcoal filter (N80):

  • ‒ Press ⇒key.
 
→ Indicated on display:

Solenoid valve 1 for activated charcoal filter N80
  • The activated charcoal filter solenoid valve 1 (on air cleaner lower part) must click until the next final control element is selected by pressing the ⇒ key.
  • ‒ Pull hose off solenoid valve (from activated charcoal filter).
  • ‒ Connect auxiliary hose.
  • ‒ During final control diagnosis blow into auxiliary hose (in direction of intake manifold upper part).
        Valve must open and close

If the solenoid valve does not click:

 
N24-0251
  • ‒ → Pull 2 pin connector off valve and connect diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 with aux. cables from V.A.G 1594 to disconnected connector.
        The LED must flash

When LED flashes:

  • ‒ Renew solenoid valve.

=> Repair group 20; Removing and installing parts of fuel supply system; Servicing activated charcoal filter system

LED does not flash:

  • ‒ Switch off ignition
 
N24-0219
  • ‒ Remove dash panel insert:

=> Electrical system; Repair group 90

  • ‒ → Connect test box V.A.G 1598/18 to control unit wiring loom.

 
N24-0231
  • ‒ → Check wire between test box socket 31+2 pin connector contact 1 for open circuit according to current flow diagram.
        Wire resistance: Max. 1.5 ω

If no fault in wire is detected:

  • ‒ Check solenoid valve voltage supply according to current flow diagram, if necessary renew Motronic control unit (J220) , item 2.

Activate exhaust gas recirculation valve (N18):

  • ‒ Press ⇒ button.
 
→ Indicated on display:
Final control diagnosis    ⇒
Exhaust gas recirculation valve -N18
  • The exhaust gas recirculation valve must click until the next final control element is activated by pressing the ⇒ key.
 
N24-0254

If the exhaust gas recirculation valve does not click:

  • ‒ → Pull 2 pin connector off valve and connect diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 with aux. cables from V.A.G 1594 to disconnected connector.
        The LED must flash

LED flashes:

  • ‒ Replace exhaust gas recirculation valve:

=> Repair group 26; Exhaust gas recirculation system

LED does not flash:

 
N24-0219
  • ‒ Switch off ignition
  • ‒ Remove dash panel insert:

=> Electrical system; Repair group 90

  • ‒ → Connect test box V.A.G 1598/18 to control unit wiring loom.
 
N24-0231
  • ‒ Check wire between test box socket 30+2 pin connector contact 2 for open circuit according to current flow diagram.
        Wire resistance: Max. 1.5 ω

If no fault in wire is detected:

  • ‒ Check exhaust gas recirculation valve voltage supply according to current flow diagram, if necessary renew Motronic control unit (J220) , item 2.

Activate secondary air inlet valve (N112):

  • ‒ Press ⇒ button.
 
→ Indicated on display:
Final control diagnosis    ⇒
Secondary air inlet valve -N112
  • The secondary air inlet valve must click until the next final control element is activated by pressing the ⇒ key.
 
N24-0255

If the secondary air inlet valve does not click:

  • ‒ → Pull 2 pin connector off valve and connect diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 with aux. cables from V.A.G 1594 to disconnected connector.
        The LED must flash

LED flashes:

  • ‒ Replace secondary air inlet valve:

=> Repair group 26; Secondary air system; Removing and installing parts of secondary air system

LED does not flash:

 
N24-0219
  • ‒ Switch off ignition
  • ‒ Remove dash panel insert:

=> Electrical system; Repair group 90

  • ‒ → Connect test box V.A.G 1598/18 to control unit wiring loom.

 
N24-0231
  • ‒ → Check wire between test box socket 50+2 pin connector contact 1 for open circuit according to current flow diagram.
        Wire resistance: Max. 1.5 ω

If no fault in wire is detected:

  • ‒ Check secondary air inlet valve voltage supply according to current flow diagram, if necessary renew Motronic control unit (J220) Page 24-8, item 2.

Activate secondary air pump relay (J299):

  • ‒ Press ⇒ button.
 
→ Indicated on display:

Secondary air pump relay -J299
  • The secondary air pump relay (J299) activates the secondary air pump motor (V101) which runs at intervals until the final control diagnosis is terminated by pressing the ⇒ key.

If the secondary air pump motor (V101) does not run at intervals:

 
N24-0259
  • ‒ → Pull 2 pin connector off secondary air pump and connect diode test lamp V.A.G 1527 with aux. cables from V.A.G 1594 to disconnected connector.
        LED must flash

LED flashes:

  • ‒ Renew solenoid valve.

=> Repair group 26; Secondary air system; Removing and installing parts of secondary air system

LED does not flash:

  • ‒ Switch off ignition
  • ‒ Remove dash panel insert:

=> Electrical system; Repair group 90

 
N24-0219
  • ‒ → Connect test box V.A.G 1598/18 to control unit wiring loom.
  • ‒ Pull cover off additional relays on left in engine compartment.

 
N26-0096
  • ‒ → Pull secondary air pump relay -arrow 1- off relay plate.

Notes:

  • ◆ If tools are necessary to pull relays or control units out of the relay plate, first disconnect battery earth strap.
  • ◆ Before disconnecting battery earth strap obtain code for radios with anti-theft coding.
 
N24-0256
  • ‒ → Check wire between test box socket 49 + contact 4 in relay plate for open circuit according to current flow diagram.
        Wire resistance: Max. 1.5 ω

If no fault in wire is detected:

  • ‒ Check secondary air pump relay voltage supply using current flow diagram, if necessary replace Motronic control unit (J220) Page 24-8, item 2.
  • ‒ Press ⇒ button.

Note:

After completion of the final control diagnosis input 06 for "End output" function and confirm with Q.

  • ‒ Switch off ignition
