Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  105-pin tester box -V.A.G 1598/42-1-
t  Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system -VAS 5051 A- with the multimeter cables -VAS 5051/7-
  Note
t  These functions vary according to the engine version and engine control unit, not being available for all vehicles. → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locationsand (for the corresponding engine control unit).
t  Vehicles with manual climate control have the air conditioning control unit -J301- exchange data with the relevant engine control unit through the data bus system (read measured values block of the manual climate control) and → Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 in the function "Guided fault finding". (for the manual climate control and the relevant engine control unit).

t  There is a commutator fitted on the Heating control unit -J65-. This potentiometer is activated by the dial controller for temperature selection -A- and through this the engine control unit is informed of the position of the temperature dial position.
–  Where vehicles have refrigeration controlled by a characteristic field, the engine control unit in certain engines influences the activation of therefrigeration thermostat of the engine regulated by a map of characteristics -F265-. If the temperature dial controller -A- is at maximum “heat” or just before, the coolant temperature lowers (limited to about 95 °C) to avoid excessively high air outlet temperatures from the heating vents → vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 in the function "Guided fault finding". (for the relevant engine control unit).
–  In vehicles with certain direct injection petrol engines “FSI”, the relevant engine control unit influences the fuel mixture preparation. If the temperature dial controller -A- is at maximum “heat” or just before, the stratified load mode for the fuel mixture is abandoned to provide better heating for the coolant ( and greater heating power); the engine functions is normal mode → Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 in the function "Guided fault finding". (for the relevant engine control unit).

–  In those vehicles where this function is planned, the ignition connected applies to contact -B- (between contacts “1” and “10”) a voltage of about 5V ( from the relevant engine control unit). → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations and → Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 in the function "Guided fault finding". (for the relevant engine control unit).
  E80-10001
–  Contact “2” in connector -B- to the heating control unit -J65--A-, depending on the temperature dial controller position -A-, emits a voltage of about 0.5V ( at maximum “cold”) and about 4.5V (at maximum “heat”). The relevant engine control unit detects the position of the temperature controller -A- through this voltage. The engine control unit processes this voltage and regulates the coolant temperature and the mixture according to the characteristic curves stored in the memory. → Vehicle diagnostic, testing and information system VAS 5051 in the function "Guided fault finding". (for the relevant engine control unit).
