Removing and installing fuel tank with its attachments and fuel filter
1 - Cap
q   Renew seal if damaged
2 - Retaining ring
3 - Tank flap unit
q   Removing and installing: → General Body Repairs, Exterior; Rep. Gr.55
4 - Vent pipe
q   Clipped onto top of fuel tank
q   Check securely seated
q   Secure to activated charcoal filter canister with a spring-type clip → Chapter
5 - Gravity/overflow valve
q   To remove, release locking lug and unclip valve upwards out of filler neck
q   Check valve for through-flow valve vertical: open, valve tilted 90°: closed
6 - Earth connection
7 - 4 Nm
8 - Fuel gauge sender
9 - Return pipe
q   Blue or with blue marking
q   From fuel rail → Item
10 - Union nut, 75 Nm
q   Remove and install with spanner -U-40055 A-
11 - Flange
q   Note fitting position on fuel tank
12 - Pipe, shaped
q   Must not touch the fuel tank (transmission of pump noise)
13 - Seal
q   Renew if damaged
q   Coat with fuel when installing
14 - Fuel delivery unit
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
  Note!
Following all work on fuel delivery unit or fuel gauge, ensure that the fuel supply and return pipes/hoses do not touch the fuel tank (transmission of pump noise).
15 - Fuel filter
q   Fitting position: Arrow points in through-flow direction
16 - Supply pipe
q   Black
q   Clipped onto top of fuel tank
q   Check securely seated
q   To remove from flange, press release button on connecting piece or loosen clamping collar
q   To fuel filter → Item
17 - 3 Nm
18 - Fuel tank
q   Support with hydraulic lift jack -SAT 1001- when removing
q   Press clamping washer from heat shield tightly onto pins on vehicle floor
q   Removing and installing → Chapter
19 - 25 Nm
20 - Sealing boot
q   After installing filler pipes fit over fuel tank connections, having turned boot inside out
21 - Filler neck
q   With non-return valve
22 - Vent valve
q   Checking → Fig.
q   To remove push locking latch lightly to inside and pull valve out
23 - O-ring
q   For filler neck
24 - Sealing boot
q   For filler neck
25 - Seal
q   Renew if damaged

   
Fitting position of fuel delivery unit flange
Marking on flange must align with the marking on fuel tank.
Blue or blue marked return pipe -1- to connection with identification -R-.
Black supply pipe -2- to connection with identification -V-.
  Note!
After installing fuel delivery unit flange, check that the supply, return and breather pipes are still clipped onto the fuel tank.

Checking vent valve
Lever in rest position: Closed
Lever pushed in direction of arrow: Open
  Note!
Before installing vent valve remove fuel tank cap.
