Draining
–  Open the cap of the coolant expansion tank.
  WARNING
Steam may be released when opening the expansion tank. Cover the cap with a cloth and open carefully.
–  Remove noise insulation: → Bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. Gr.50.
–  Place the drip tray -T20173- under the engine.

–  To drain coolant from radiator remove drain plug -arrow-.
  A10-0118
–  To drain coolant from engine also remove coolant hose from oil cooler -arrow-.
  Note
Observe disposal regulations!
Filling
  Caution
To mix you may only use water from the tap. Mineral water does not possess the properties that guarantee the coolant proper function.
  Note
t  The range of models up to and including 2007 can use Gº12º plus anti-freeze agent, according to TLºVWº774ºF and Gº12º plus-plus, according to TLºVWº774ºG standards.
t  G 12 plus-plus can be mixed with G 12 plus antifreeze agent. Both agents are coloured mauve.
t  “According to TLºVWº774ºG” or “according to TLºVWº774ºF” anti-freeze agents prevent damage from rust, freezing or lime sediment, and also raise the boiling point of the coolant. For these reasons, the cooling system must be filled all year round with an anti-freeze and anti-corrosion agent.
t  Especially in countries with a tropical climate, thanks to the high boiling point the cooling liquid contributes to guaranteeing the secure operation, even when the engine is put under strain.
t  The antifreeze protection must be guaranteed to approx. - 25 ºC (down to approx. -35°C in countries with arctic climate).
t  The concentration of the coolant must not be reduced by adding water in summer or in countries with hot climates. The percentage of coolant additive must be at least 40 %.
t  If the climate requires a stronger anti-freeze, the anti-freeze agent can be increased up to a maximum of 60% (anti-freeze protection down to approx. -40ºC). The cooling capacity and the anti-freeze are reduced with higher proportions.
t  The refractometer -T10007- is recommended for determining the anti-freeze density.
t  If radiator, heat exchanger, cylinder head or cylinder head gasket has been replaced, do not reuse old coolant.

1) The quantity of coolant can vary depending upon the vehicle specifications.

–  Screw in the cooling liquid drainage bolt -arrow-.
–  Fitting the sound proofing: → Bodywork, exterior fitting work; Rep. Gr.50
  A10-0118
–  Connect the cooling liquid hoses to the oil cooler -arrow-.
  A10-0119
–  Fill coolant reservoir -VAS 6096/1- with at least 8 litres of premixed coolant of the right mixture ratio.
–  Screw on adaptor -VAG 1274/8- to the coolant expansion tank.
–  Fit cooling system charge unit -VAS 6096- on the adaptor -VAG 1274/8-.
–  Introduce air discharge hose -1- into a small recipient -2-. As well as air, a small quantity of coolant will be expelled and must be collected.
–  Close both valves -A and B-. To do this turn the lever at right angles to direction of flow.
–  Connect hose -3- to compressed air.
l  Pressure: 6 ... 10 bars overpressure.
  A19-0351
–  Open valve -B- by turning the lever in direction of flow.
The suction jet pump creates a vacuum in the cooling system.
l  The display instrument needle must move to the green area.
–  Additionally, open briefly the valve -A-. To do this turn lever to direction of flow so that the coolant reservoir -VAS 6096/1- hose can be filled with coolant.
–  Close the valve again -A-.
–  Leave valve -B- open for 2 further minutes.
l  The suction jet pump creates further vacuum in the cooling system.
l  The pointer of the indicator must remain in the green zone.
–  Close valve -B-.
l  The display instrument needle must remain in the green area so that the vacuum in the cooling system is sufficient for the following charge.
If the needle is below the green area, repeat the procedure.
If the vacuum drops the cooling system is leaking.
–  Pull out pressure hose.
–  Open valve -A-.
The vacuum in the cooling system sucks the coolant out of the coolant reservoir -VAS 6096/1- and the cooling system is filled.
  A19-0353
–  Check the coolant level and, if necessary, top up to the MAX marking.
–  Start engine and run at 1500 rpm for max. 2 minutes and at the same time fill with coolant up to overflow hole on expansion tank.
–  Screw on cap on coolant expansion tank.
–  Run engine until radiator fan cuts-in.
  WARNING
Hot vapour/hot coolant may escape when opening expansion tank. Cover cap with cloth and open carefully.
–  Check coolant level and top up any missing coolant, if necessary. If the engine is warm, coolant level must be at max. mark; if cold, between min. and max. marks.
