Safety precautions
If in the test drives it is necessary to use the tester units, take note of the following:
  WARNING
t  Always attach the testers and measuring instruments to the rear seat and have them operated from there by a second person.
t  If test equipment is operated from the front passenger's seat, the occupant could suffer injury in the event of an accident if the front passenger's airbag is triggered.
To prevent injuries to persons and/or damage to the fuel injection and ignition system, the following must be noted:
t  For safety reasons, the battery must be disconnected before opening the fuel system. As the fuel pump is activated by the door contact switch of the driver´s door.
t  Persons wearing a cardiac pacemaker must maintain a safe distance from high-voltage components such as the ignition system and Xenon headlights at all times.
t  Do not open any fuel line connections while the engine is running.
t  The ignition must be switched off before connecting or disconnecting injection or ignition system wiring or tester cables.
t  If engine is to be operated at cranking speed without it starting (e.g. compression test), unplug connectors from ignition coils and remove fuse for electric fuel pump.
t  In some tests the control unit may detect and store an error. The event memory should therefore be interrogated and (if necessary) erased after completing the tests and any repair work that may be required.
t  If fault memory has been erased, you must generate the readiness code again.
t  Always switch off ignition before cleaning engine.
t  Only disconnect and connect the battery with the ignition switched off, otherwise the engine control unit may be damaged.
  WARNING
The fuel system is pressurised. The fuel pressure in the high-pressure part of the injection system must be reduced to a residual pressure prior to opening, see procedure.
The connection must be opened »immediately« after reducing the pressure; wrap a cloth around the connection and allow the residual pressure (approx. 7 bar) to dissipate.
  Note
t  The fuse is located in the fuse holder in the dash panel.
t  Removing the fuse -located in fuse carrier in dash panel on driver's side- will interrupt the power supply from »terminal 30« for the fuel pump control unit -J538-. → Current flow diagrams, Electrical fault finding and Fitting locations
