Cylinder head - exploded view   Note t  The plastic protectors fitted to protect the open valves must only be removed immediately before fitting the cylinder head. t  When fitting a new cylinder head or cylinder head gasket, drain off all the old coolant and re-fill with new coolant.

1 -	Cylinder head

q	Removing and installing → Chapter

q	Renew coolant after replacing.

q	Loosen following the indicated sequence → Fig.

q	Note correct sequence when tightening → Fig.

q	Before fitting, fit the washers to the cylinder head → Item

Slackening cylinder head bolts –  Slacken off cylinder head bolts in sequence -1 ... 10-.

Cylinder head tightening sequence

1.  Tighten to 30 Nm with torque wrench. 2.  Tighten to 50 Nm with torque wrench. 3.  Turn 90° (1/4 turn) further using a rigid wrench. 4.  Turn 90° (1/4 turn) further using a rigid wrench.

Note Cylinder head bolts do not have to be torque down again later after repair work.

Checking cylinder head for distortion Special tools and workshop equipment required t  Auxiliary ruler t  Feeler gauge Maximum permissible deformation: 0.1 mm   Note Cylinder heads for TDI engines must not be reworked.

Cylinder head identification 1 -  Part No. 2 -  Holes 3 -  Disregard   Note t  Different thicknesses of cylinder head gasket are fitted depending on the piston projection. When renewing gasket, install new gasket with same identification. t  Piston projection at TDC must be measured when installing new pistons or a short engine → Chapter.
