Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Gauge -VAS 6079-, see equivalent → Anchor

t  Adjustment tool -VW 387-, please see Correspondence → Anchor

Operation process
–  Removing the tappets → Chapter.
–  Re-install the camshaft with the first and the last bearing cap.
–  Secure dial gauge -VAS 6079- with universal dial gauge bracket -VW 387- to cylinder head as shown in illustration.
–  Press the camshaft against the gauge with your hand.
–  Set the dial gauge to “0”.
–  Remove the camshaft from the gauge and read the result:
Axial clearance on inlet camshaft and exhaust camshaft:
l  Wear limit: 0.15 mm.
