Special tools and workshop equipment required
   
t  Adjustment tool -VW 387-, please see Correspondence → Anchor
  W00-0037
t  Gauge -VAS 6079-, see equivalent → Anchor
Checking sequence
–  Remove camshafts → Chapter.
  Note
t  Take care not to interchange bucket tappets.
t  Use waterproof felt-tip pen to mark assignment of bucket tappets on back of tappets.
–  Take bucket tappets out of guides and set them down with bearing surface facing downwards.
–  Insert camshafts in cylinder head and fit bearing cap at chain sprocket end and fit double bearing cap.

–  Fasten the adjustment device -VW 387- with themeasuring clock -VAS 6079- on the cylinder head:
Supply camshaft
  A15-0119
Exhaust camshaft
–  Press the camshaft that is to be checked against the dial gauge by hand.
–  Set the dial gauge to „0“.
–  Remove the camshaft from the gauge and read the result:
l  Axial clearance: wear limit for inlet and exhaust camshaft: 0.20 mm.
