Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Socket -10 222A-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Suspension tool -10 222A/8-, see equivalent → Anchor (Ibiza only)
t  Socket -T10358-, see equivalent → Anchor
t  Torque wrench -VAG 1332-, see equivalent → Anchor.
t  Torque wrench -VAG 1331-, see equivalent → Anchor.

Removing
Remove the following components:
t  Lower valve timing housing: Removing and installing → Chapter.
t  Upper distribution housing: Removing and installing → Chapter.
t  Upper bracket for auxiliary units: removing and fitting → Chapter
t  Turbocharger: removing and fitting → Chapter.
t  Removing and installing intake manifold → Chapter.

Ibiza
For all vehicles
–  Pull the filler piece -1- up as far as it will go until the lever -80 200- can be inserted.
–  Attach two spindles with hooks to the support bracket -10 222A-.

–  Attach the support bracket -10 222A- with the adapter -10 222A/8- as shown in the figure.
–  Attach the adapter -10 222A/8- as shown in front in the vehicle -arrows-.
–  Fit the hooks to the left attachment lug.

–  Unscrew the front attachment bolt of the gearbox and screw on the bracket -T10358- as shown in the figure.
–  Fit the hooks of the support device -10 222A- to the bracket -T10358- as shown in the figure.
–  Rotate the spindle until the hooks are slightly tensed.
–  Open and close the lid of the expansion tank again for releasing the pressure in the cooling system.
–  Drain coolant → Chapter.
–  Observe rules for cleanliness → Chapter.

–  Remove the fuel supply line -1- and the wire, which leads to the activated carbon container -2-. To do so, press the tabs.
  WARNING
Fuel supply line is pressurised. Wear safety goggles and appropriate clothing to avoid injury and contact with skin. Before loosening hose connections, wrap a cloth around the connection. Then release pressure by carefully pulling hose off connection.

–  Detach the hose -1- leading to the activated carbon container, of solenoid valve 1 for the activated charcoal filter -N80-.
–  Undo the securing bolts -2- and remove the activated carbon container upwards.

For all vehicles
–  Remove the spring-type hose and the coolant hoses -1- and -2-.
–  Press the retainer -3- beneath the coolant hoses and pull the hose upwards.
–  Move the coolant hoses to the rear.
–  Remove the thermostat housing from the cylinder head.

Altea, Altea XL, Leon
–  Unscrew the assembly mountings on the engine side from upwards -arrows-.
–  Remove the assembly mounting and unscrew the engine support.

Ibiza
–  Unscrew the earth cable -1-.
  Caution
Nut -2- must not be loosened.
–  Unscrew the bolts -arrows- that fix the spring mount of the engine.
–  Completely remove the spring mount of the engine.

For all vehicles
–  Release the hook -1- from the left eye and move the spindle to the left-hand side of the support tool -10 222A-.
To remove and fit the cylinder head cover → Chapter
–  Remove roller rocker fingers together with support elements and lay aside on clean surface.
–  Ensure that the roller rocker fingers and the support elements are not mixed up.

–  Loosen socket head bolts in the sequence given and then remove completely.
–  Carefully remove cylinder head.

Installing
Installation is carried out in the reverse sequence; note the following:
Tightening torque of the non-return valve -arrow-: 7 Nm
Premise
l  Pistons must not be at TDC.
  Note
t  Do not remove the new cylinder head gasket from its packing until immediately before its installation.
t  Handle the new gasket with extreme care. If damaged, leaks may result.
–  Place a clean cloth in cylinders so that no dirt or particles can get in between cylinder wall and piston.
–  Carefully clean the sealing surfaces on the cylinder head and cylinder block. Ensure no long grooves or scratches are produced (if using sandpaper, it must be at least 100 grit).
–  Carefully remove any abrasive metal particles and then the cloths.
–  Position the cylinder number 1 into TDC and then rotate the crankshaft a little backwards.
–  Fit a new cylinder head gasket. The lettering (spare part no.) must be legible.
–  Fit cylinder head. Note the centering pins of the engine block.
–  Fit new cylinder head bolts and tighten by hand.

–  Tighten cylinder head bolts in tightening sequence as follows:
–  Tighten all bolts to 40 Nm.
–  Then rotate all bolts at 90° using a rigid wrench.
–  Finally, rotate all bolts one more time at 90°.
–  Install support elements in cylinder head and fit respective roller rocker fingers onto respective valve stem end and support elements.
Install the cylinder head cover → Chapter.
–  Adjust distribution timing → Chapter.
