Work sequence
–  Remove valve timing housing → Chapter.
  W00-0060
–  To turn the crankshaft, place the bushing, the crankshaft pulley -2- and the crankshaft bolt -3- in position and tighten the crankshaft bolt (use retention tool -3415-).
–  Remove the cylinder 1 spark plug. To do so, use the extractor -T10094A- and the wrench -3122B- → Chapter.
  N15-0655
–  Release connector -2- and pull off.
–  Remove oil pressure switch -F1--1-.
  N15-10696
–  Tighten the adjustment tool -T10170- as far as possible on the thread of the spark plug.
–  Insert the gauge -VAS 6079- with the extension -T10170/1- as far as it will go and tighten it with the clamping nut -arrow-.
–  Turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation to TDC cylinder 1 . Observe the position of the small pointer of the gauge.
–  Next, turn the crankshaft 45° in the opposite direction to that of the engine rotation.
  N15-10226
–  Push the tensioning rail -1- in the direction of the -arrow- and lock the piston with the locking bolt -T40011-.
  N15-0655
–  Mark direction of rotation of timing chain -3- using coloured felt tip marker pen.
  Note
Camshaft adjuster centre bolt -2- has a left-hand thread.
–  Remove bolts -2- and -4- and take out the variator -1- together with the distribution chain -3-. To lock, use the retention tool -T10172-.
–  Install camshaft adjuster -1- again.
–  Renew bolts -2- and -4-. Tighten bolt -2- to 40 Nm and bolt -4- to 50 Nm (use counterhold -T10172-).
  N15-0686
–  Remove the coolant hose from the hose clip -arrow-.
–  Unscrew the securing screws and remove the sealing cover of the camshaft -1-.
  N15-10225
–  Turn the intake and exhaust camshafts until the adjustment tool -T10171A- is able to fully enter the openings in the camshafts.
Locking pins -arrows 1- must engage in holes -arrows 2-. Inscription „TOP“-arrow 3- must be readable from above.
  Note
Camshafts must not be pushed axially whilst turning.
  N15-10370
–  For securing the camshaft fastener -T10171A-, screw an M6 screw -arrow- in the respective hole by hand (do not tighten).
  Note
Remember that there are different securing points for the camshaft fastener -T10171A-.
–  Remove camshaft sprocket bolts. Always use the retention tool -T10172-.
  Note
The camshaft fastener -T10171A- must not be used as a retention tool.
–  Remove one camshaft sprocket.
–  Place timing chain over camshaft sprockets, observing chain direction of rotation, and install camshaft sprocket again.
–  Tighten camshaft bolts until camshaft sprockets can still just be turned on camshafts.
–  Tension the distribution chain by removing the retention tool -T40011-.
  N15-10369
–  Turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation to TDC cylinder 1 . Permissible deviation from TDC cylinder 1:  ±  0.01 mm.
  Note
When the crankshaft rotates more than 0.01 mm beyond the TDC, the crankshaft must be rotated by approx. 45° against the direction of the engine again. Next, turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine rotation to TDC cylinder 1 .
  N15-0653
–  Unscrew plug -arrow- from crankcase.
–  Tighten the securing screw -T10340- until the end point in the crankshaft sump.
–  Tighten the securing screw -T10340- → Anchor.
  N15-10223
Use the securing screw -T10340- to immobilise the crankshaft in the direction of operation of the engine.
  N15-10227
–  Using the retention tool -T10172-, hold the camshaft sprockets -1- and -5- in this position and tighten the bolts -2- (left-threaded) to 40 Nm and -4- to 50 Nm.
  Note
Crankshaft must not move and timing chain -3- must remain tensioned on both sides when tightening camshaft bolts.
–  Remove adjustment tool -T10171A-.
  N15-0686
–  Undo the fastening bolt -T10340- of the crankshaft sump.
–  Turn the crankshaft in the direction of engine by 2 rotations to TDC cylinder 1 . Permissible deviation from TDC cylinder 1:  ±  0.01 mm.
  N15-10227
–  Fit the adjustment tool -T10171A- as far as possible into the openings of the camshaft.
If the adjustment tool -T10171A- can not be inserted:
–  Repeat adjustment.
If the adjustment tool -T10171A- can be inserted:
  N15-10370
–  Tighten the securing screw -T10340- until the end point in the crankshaft sump.
–  Tighten the securing bolts securing bolts -T10340- to 30 Nm.
  N15-10227
–  Remove the camshaft fastener -T10171A-, lock the camshaft sprockets using the counter holder -T10172- and tighten the screws -2- (left hand thread) and -4- using a spanner by 1/4 of a rotation (90°).
  Note
t  Camshaft adjuster centre bolt -2- has a left-hand thread.
t  Camshaft sprockets must not move on camshaft whilst tightening.
Install in reverse order to dismantling, noting the following:
  Note
The fastening screw -T10340- is left on the crankshaft sump until the crankshaft pulley is mounted.
–  Install timing housing → Chapter.
–  Install crankshaft pulley → Chapter.
–  Poly-V belt: Installing → Chapter.
–  Replace the seals of the camshaft covers and lubricate with oil before assembly.
