Removing
–  In the versions with rigid battery protection, remove the cover -1-; press the release tab -arrow- to do so.
  WARNING
Observe safety precautions when disconnecting the battery → Electrical system; Rep. gr.27 .

–  With ignition switched off, disconnect earth wire at battery .
  WARNING
Hot vapour/hot coolant may escape when opening expansion tank. Cover cap with cloth and open carefully.
–  Open cap of coolant expansion tank.

–  Detach engine cover -arrows-.

–  Remove central soundproofing -Anchorage points 1 ... 3-.
–  Place the drip tray -T20173- under the engine.

–  Turn drain plug -arrow- on radiator anti-clockwise, if necessary fit drain hose to connection.

–  Disconnect the connector -1- of the oil pressure sender -F1-.
–  Additionally take coolant hose on lower part of oil cooler off -2- and drain off remaining coolant.

–  Take the active carbon filter out upwards with hoses connected and place to side.

Before removing the ribbed belt, mark its running direction with chalk or with a felt tipped pen. If the belt runs in the opposite direction when it is refitted, this can cause it to rupture.
–  To slacken the Poly-V belt, turn the tensioner in the direction of the -arrow-.

–  Immobilise the tensioner of the Poly-V belt with the counterhold -T20167-.
–  Remove poly V-belt.

–  Remove the bolt -1- and take off the grille on the air duct using the lever -U-30800-.
  WARNING
The air conditioner refrigerant circuit must not be opened.

–  Disconnect electrical connection -1- for electromagnetic coupling on air conditioner compressor.
–  Unscrew the bolts -arrow- for air conditioner compressor.
  Note
To avoid damage to the air conditioning compressor or in the flexible conduits/tubes of the cooling agent, the tubes must not be pulled, bent or stretched excessively.

–  Protect the bumper with adhesive tape -arrow- to prevent scratches.
–  Tie air conditioning compressor together with connected refrigerant hoses up to the bumper.

–  Disconnect the electrical connection from the alternator -arrow-.

–  Screw out bolts -arrows- and detach alternator from bracket for ancillary units.
–  Swing the alternator with the electrical cables connected to the right-hand side of the vehicle.

–  Unbolt cable -2- and remove the alternator.
–  Disconnect retainer -1- from alternator.

–  Remove coolant hose -2-, pull out retaining clip -1- for this purpose.

–  Unscrew mount for auxiliary equipment -Screws 1 ... 6- and remove.
–  Remove fastening bolts → Item and the switch → Item, and remove the Cooling system thermostat managed on the basis of a map of characteristics -F265-.
Installing
Continue the installation in the reverse order of removal sequence, observing the following:
  Note
Renew O-ring.
–  Clean and smooth down sealing surface for O-ring as required.
–  Fit the cooling liquid thermostat.
l  Fitting position: The thermostat retainer should be in a vertical position.
–  Moisten new O-ring with coolant G12+.
–  Fit the ancillaries bracket → Chapter
–  Fill up coolant → Chapter.
–  Fitting alternator: → Electrical system; Rep. gr. 27
–  Install the air conditioner compressor → Air conditioning system; Rep. gr. 87.
–  Install poly V-belt → Chapter.
–  Connect battery. Note the following. → Air conditioning; Repair group 27.
