Removing
Removing
–  Remove the prolonged central console: → Rep. Gr.68
–  Release hand brake.
   
–  Loosen the adjustment nut -arrow- to release the hand brake cables from the compensation brace.

–  Place the pedal actuator -V.A.G 1788/10- on the brake pedal.
  Note
Positioning the rod for applying the foot brake will avoid drainage of the braking system and the ABS hydraulic unit.
–  Lift the vehicle to assembly height.
  Note
Before removing the rear axle, lash the vehicle to the arms of the elevator arms. Otherwise, there is a danger that the vehicle will tip over.

–  Extract the longitudinal member plugs -3- and insert the securing straps -2- through the holes.

 - Lash (secure) the vehicle on both sides with the tool
–  Remove wheels.

–  Pull connector -1- off the ABS sensor.
–  Unclip the rev. sensor cable from its fittings on the rear axle -arrows- .
–  In vehicles with brake pads wear indicator, disconnect the connector.
Vehicles without ABS

–  Unscrew the bolt -1- for the spring attachment of the braking force regulator.
Vehicles with headlight range automatic adjustment

–  Unscrew the bolt -1- and the nut -2- and separate the link rod from the attachment to the rear axle and the level sender rod.
Continued for all vehicles

–  Extract the lower bolts -arrows- of the wheel housing on both sides.

–  Disconnect the left hand side brake hose using the wrench -A-56126- arrow -A- and extract the securing clip.
–  Take out the left hand side brake hose from the bracket -2-.
–  Disconnect the right hand side brake hose from the axle bracket using the wrench -A-56126- and extract the securing clip.
–  Unhook the hand brake cable, from the brackets arrow -B-.

–  Remove the hand brake cable from the guide tube -1- by pulling it in the -direction of the arrow.-.

–  Fit in the hole underneath the axle body, the hydraulic jack -SAT 1040- along with the base -T20145 -.
–  Raise the hydraulic jack a little to relieve the pressure on the lower shock absorber attachment.
–  Unscrew the nut -1- and extract the bolt -2-.
–  Carry out the same operation on the opposite side to extract the bolt -2- from the shock absorber.
–  Remove the springs.

–  Fit in the hole underneath the rear axle body, the support tool -T20161- with the base -T20145- fitted to the engine and gearbox jack -SAT 1040-.
–  Extract the rear axle to bodywork attachment bolts from both sides.
–  Carefully lower the rear axle using the hydraulic jack -SAT 1040-.
  Note
Secure the axle while lowering it using a strap or with the help of a second mechanic.
