Testing a shock absorber apart
Testing a shock absorber apart
Faulty shock absorbers cause dull sounds due to the wheel jumping, especially when the ground is uneven; these must be replaced. Generally the cause of the problem is the loss of oil. The shock absorber will have a “dead stroke”.
  Note
The shock absorbers are maintenance-free. The shock absorber oil cannot be topped up.
The manual test is used to determine if the shock absorber is faulty or not:
–  Press on the shock absorber by hand.
–  The piston rod should move with equal difficulty over the whole range with jerking.
–  Release the piston rod. If the shock absorber has sufficient compressed gas, this will return to the original position.
  Note
t  If this was not the case, this still would not mean that the shock absorber required replacement. While there is no major oil loss the shock absorber will continue to operate as normal.
t  The shock absorbing function is intact even without compressed gas while there is no oil loss. However, the noise may increase. For older vehicles, shock absorbers with no pressure may continue to be used and will function correctly.
t  The compressed gas improves the acoustic performance of the shock absorber and its operation on uneven surfaces.
