Dismantling and assembling column tube Special tools and workshop equipment required

t  Multi-purpose tool -VW 771- Dismantling

–  Pull steering column as far as possible out of column tube. –  Take off bearing ring -2-. 1 -  Thread M 10 approx. 50 mm long  -  Prepare this yourself if needed, e.g. use bolt M 10 and saw off bolt head. –  Unbolt -VW 771- from steering column.

–  Drive off steering lock housing.

–  Unbolt nut -1- from operating lever -2-. –  Take off washer -3-.

–  Pull out clamping bolt -1- with operating lever. –  Pull off column tube. –  Remove spring.

–  Unclip clips on mounting -1- with two screwdrivers (slotted head) -2- and carefully drive out mounting downwards. –  Pull steering column downwards out of housing. Ensure that the balls from the lower mounting in column tube do not fall out. Assembling –  Guide steering column from below into housing.

–  Carefully drive mounting in with plastic hammer until the clips in the housing aperture -arrow- lock into place. –  Slide spring and thrust piece onto steering column.

–  Hook spring -1- into bearing bracket -2-. –  Place column tube onto steering column and slide onto spring -1- at the same time. –  Fit clamping bolt into bearing bracket using operating lever.

–  Fit washer -1- with guide wedge. Make sure that the guide wedge -arrow- is lying correctly in the bearing bracket guide on both sides. –  Screw on new self-locking nuts.

–  Tighten nut -1- to the point where the steering column can only just be moved on an incline and longitudinally when the operating lever -2- is released. When operating lever -2- is locked, it must be impossible to move the steering column, whether on an incline or longitudinally. –  Fit steering lock housing onto column tube. –  Fit bearing ring onto steering column.

–  Pull steering column as far as possible out of column tube and hold in place. When pulling out the steering column, press bearing ring -1- against the ball bearing in the steering lock housing. 2 -  Threaded rod M 10 approx. 50 mm long –  Disconnect extractor -VW 771-.
