Snow chains
Snow chains
General notes
Chains may only be fitted on the drive-wheels.
However, in four-wheel drive vehicles only the front wheels should be fitted with snow chains.
Chains can not be mounted on all rim and tyre combinations. Information on this is given in the table with technical data in these guidelines → Chapter.

With certain rim/tyre combinations on certain vehicle models it is only permissible to install special snow chains with small chain links (9 mm or 7 mm) (this dimension also applies for the chain lock). Information on this is given in the table with technical data in these guidelines → Chapter.
  Note
The maximum legally permitted speed for driving with snow chains is 50 km/h.
It is necessary to remove the chains on snow-free roads, because the driving characteristics are poorer and the wear to the chains and tyres is greater.
Instructions for installing snow chains
  Caution
t  Before installing snow chains check whether sufficient space is available in the wheel well.
t  After installing snow chains check the space in the wheel well again.
It may necessary to remove caked snow and ice.
Install chains and tension, retention after driving a short distance.
„Practice installing“ chains in dry conditions before starting a trip to facilitate actual installation when nervous and cold
  Note
Observe the care and maintenance instructions of the snow chain manufacturer.
Special snow chain versions
Special versions of snow chains are available which provide an additional slip-resistant surface across the read by using different elements.
Textile sleeve:
The contact surface to the pavement consists of highly resistant fibres woven together. Tyres equipped with this system have the same traction as tyres with snow chains.
  E44-10135
These sleeves can be installed very quickly and simply.
Stiff attachment:
The tyre contact the surface over stiff synthetic bows installed over the tyre.
  E44-10131
It is very simple to install these bows on the tyre using an adapter fastened to the rim. This adapter can remain installed over the entire winter without any negative affects to the functional characteristics of the tyre.
In both cases the advantage of these special versions of snow chains is that they can be installed easily and quickly are simple to use and have a minimum height above the tyre making them particularly suitable for vehicles with little free space between the tyre and body..
  Note
The instructions for using this type of aid as well as the precautions are identical to those for conventional snow chains. Additional information regarding installation on the vehicle is given in the specific instructions published by the manufacturers of these types of devices.
