Damage to tyres as a result of underinflation
Damage to tyres as a result of underinflation
The most frequent cause of these problems is from minor exterior damage, a faulty valve or a leaky wheel rim as a result of damage or corrosion.

Detachment of the polymer casing
A sudden increase in temperature as a result of driving with underinflated tyres → Chapter causes separation between the tyre structure and the polymer fusion -arrows-.
The tyre shown was driven for a short time while underinflated with respect to the load being carried. Typical indications of this are worn points resulting from scraping in the area of the bead caused by the rim flange and discolourations. This can be recognised by small notches in the area of the inner side wall.
As the tyre rolls, strong shearing forces are produced between the layers of the steel tyre cables, especially at the ends of the radial structure.

Tyres with dents along the edge of the bead zone
Wide dents along the perimeter of the bead zone -arrows- are also the result of underinflation.
If tyres are driven on while underinflated or if tyre damage is undetected or not repaired, the consequences may be serious.

The tyre will not withstand the forces generated while driving.
Therefore, the tyre properties will be severely lessened. The polymers will become detached, and other components will be partially detached. This will result in the total destruction of the tyre.

Tyres with separated tread
This type of damage generally emerges over long periods of time. If a damaged tyre, as shown here, is subjected to high levels of stress, this may cause a break in the structure of the tyre due to the centrifugal forces generated when travelling at high speeds.
The diagram shows a tyre with the tread torn off as a result of driving with the tyre underinflated.
