Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Hose strap pliers, e.g. -V.A.G 1275 -
t  Removal and installation pliers, e.g. -VAS 5024-
t  Steering gear grease → Chapter
  Note
t  If the front axle is damaged as a result of an accident the damaged components must be replaced.
t  No provision is made for repairing on the power-assisted steering gear ⇒ Pos.12. In the event of failure determine the cause with the pressure and tightness test as well as by performing self-diagnosis or vehicle system test. If there is a fault on the power-steering gear then it must be replaced.
t  Welding and straightening of the steering components is not allowed.
t  Always use original clamping collars and circlips.
t  Only use steering gear grease, spare part number → Chapter.
t  A mixed lining of TRW and KOYO components is not permissible, assignment → Electronic Catalogue of Original Parts.
   
1 - Right track rod end
q   check → Chapter
q   removing and installing → Chapter
q   before installing, remove grease on tapered stud
2 - Counternut, 50 Nm
3 - Spring strap clamp
q   use assembly pliers, e.g. -VAS 5024- for removing and installing
4 - Bellows
q   Can only be replaced with the power steering gear removed
q   before removing boot detach the track-rod end → Chapter
q   must not be twisted
q   inspect for wear and damage (cuts, splits)
5 - Open warm-type clamp
q   replace after each removal
q   removing: open with cutting pliers
q   tensioning → Chapter
6 - Gasket
q   Pay attention to installation instructions → Chapter
q   with and without recess for anti-twist lock
q   Assignment → Electronic Catalogue of Original Parts
q   Change to the power-steering gear housing in the area of the sealing surface
   With series start the power-steering gear housing is fitted with an anti-twist lock -arrow- for the seal.
   In the course of the series production the anti-twist lock is no longer applicable.
7 - Self-tapping screw, 6 Nm
q   for attaching heat shield
8 - Heat shield
q   Assignment → Electronic Catalogue of Original Parts
9 - Clamp
Fitting position:
t  inscription must point in direction of travel
t  Replace the clamp if the thread of the nut is damaged
10 - Right track rod
q   Tightening torque on steering rack: 80 Nm
q   removing and installing → Chapter
q   track rod and track rod end are supplied as replacement part pre-set
q   lock nut for track rod/track rod end on replacement parts tightened initially only to 10 Nm.
   After installing the replacement track rod/track rod end and track adjuster, tighten lock nut fully to 50 Nm.
q   Setting the wheel toe → Chapter
11 - Rubber bearing
Fitting position:
t  the larger internal diameter points towards the outer side of the vehicle
t  replace if damaged or worn
12 - Power-steering gear
q   Assignment → Electronic Catalogue of Original Parts
q   no provision made for repairs
q   removing and installing → Chapter
q   adjust → Chapter
q   Inspecting centre position → Chapter
q   Change to the power-steering gear housing in the area of the sealing surface
   With series start the power-steering gear housing is fitted with an anti-twist lock -arrow- for the seal.
   In the course of the series production the anti-twist lock is no longer applicable.
13 - Gasket
q   replace after each removal
14 - Gasket
q   replace after each removal
15 - for power-assisted steering sensor -G250- with adapter cable
q   removing and installing → Chapter
16 - 6 Nm
17 - Adapter cable
18 - for power-assisted steering sensor -G250- with fixed connecting line
q   removing and installing → Chapter
19 - Left track rod end
q   check → Chapter
q   removing and installing → Chapter
q   before installing, remove grease on tapered stud
20 - Left track rod
q   Tightening torque on steering rack: 80 Nm
q   removing and installing → Chapter
q   track rod and track rod end are supplied as replacement part pre-set
q   lock nut for track rod/track rod end on replacement parts tightened initially only to 10 Nm.
   After installing the replacement track rod/track rod end and track adjuster, tighten lock nut fully to 50 Nm.
q   Setting the wheel toe → Chapter
