Testing knock sensorG61
Testing knock sensor -G61-
Special tools and workshop equipment required
t  Hand multimeter (e.g. -V.A.G 1526 A-)
t  Adapter cable set (e.g. -V.A.G 1594 A-)
t  Test box -V.A.G 1598/31-
  Note
t  The actual knock sensor -G61- cannot be electrically tested.
t  Only used gilded contacts to repair the cable plug for the knock sensor.
t  The perfect functioning of the knock sensor requires an exact tightening torque of 20 Nm.
Test condition
l  Fault on knock sensor detected by self-diagnosis.
Check for proper operation
–  The functional test of the knock sensor -G61 - and the knock control can be tested with the function “reading measured value block”, display groups 020, 026 and 028 → Chapter.
Checking wires
–  Connect test box -V.A.G 1598/31 - to the wiring loom on the engine control unit → Chapter.
–  Check the wiring of the knock sensor for short-circuits.
   Sockets: 101 + 109
   Specified value: ∞ Ω
If no short-circuit is found:
   
–  Disconnect the plug connection -arrow- of the knock-sensor -G61-.
–  Check wiring between the test box and the plug -1- for interruption according to the Current Flow Diagram:

–  Also check the wires for short-circuits.
   
–  Measure the resistance between the contacts 1 + 2, 1 + 3 and 2 + 3 on plug -2-.
   Specified value: ∞ Ω
If the lines are not found to be faulty:
–  Slacken knock sensor and then tighten again to 20 Nm.
–  Perform a test drive.
  Note
Comply with the safety instructions for a test drive → Chapter.
During the test drive the following operating conditions must be fulfilled:
t  The coolant temperature should rise beyond 80°C.
t  Once the temperature has been reached the following operating conditions must be reached a number of times:
   Idling speed
partial load
enrichment
full load
trailing throttle
t  “In case of full load” the speed should be increased beyond 3500 rpm.
–  Then, again interrogate the fault memory.
If the complaint still exists:
–  Replace knock sensor -G61- → Chapter.
