Safety measures
Observe the following points to prevent injury to persons and/or damage to the injection and ignition system:
t  Do not disconnect or connect ignition cables when the engine is running or operating at starting speed.
t  Ignition must be switched off before disconnecting and re-connecting cables of the fuel injection and ignition system as well as of test equipment.
t  If the engine must be operated at starter speed, without the engine actually starting, e.g. during compression testing, remove plug connections from the spark plug power output stage and from the injectors. After performing the work interrogate fault memory.
t  Do not carry out engine wash unless the ignition is switched off.
t  Switch off the ignition before disconnecting and connecting the battery, as this may damage the 4AV control unit.
  Note
t  This section deals specifically with the components relating to the ignition system. For other components of the injection and ignition system → Chapter.
t  The control unit for the injection and ignition system is equipped with self-diagnosis.
t  Components marked with an * are checked by the self-diagnosis unit → Chapter.
t  Components marked with an ** can be checked by the self-diagnosis unit → Chapter.
t  A minimum voltage of 11.5 V is required for perfect functioning of the electrical components.
t  Certain inspections may cause the control unit to detect and store a fault. It is therefore necessary to interrogate the fault memory after having completed all inspections and repairs, and if necessary delete → Chapter.
