Topping up ATF > < Inspect ATF level, if necessary top up

Inspecting ATF level
  Note
t  Gearbox not in emergency running mode, ATF temperature not above 30 °C.
t  Vehicle on level ground.
t  Selector lever in “P”.
t  Air conditioning and heating must be switched off.
   
–  Attach the reservoir of the ATF filling system e.g. -V.A.G 1924- to the vehicle.
–  Connect vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552- or vehicle diagnosis, measurement and information system -VAS 5051- → Chapter.
–  Start engine.
–  Raise vehicle.
  Note
Read off the temperature on the vehicle system tester -V.A.G 1552 -.
–  Enter 08 for the function “Read measured value block” and confirm entry with the Q key.
–  Enter 005 for the “display group number 005” and confirm with key Q.

Readout on display:
The first display field indicates the ATF temperature.
  Note
The ATF temperature must not exceed 30°C.
  WARNING
Wear safety goggles.
–  Position the catch pan under the gearbox.
 
Reading measured value block 5     ->
40° C     0011011     0          900/rpm
–  Remove screw plug for ATF inspection in the oil pan -arrow-.
The ATF present in the overflow tube flows out.
  N37-0189
–  Check, if the overflow tube -1- is screwed in up to the stop (2 Nm; hexagon socket 5 mm). The overflow tube must not be unscrewed.
–  Bring ATF to test temperature.
Test temperature: 35°C to 45°C 1)
1) for tropical climate 50°C
If ATF drips out of the hole:
It is not necessary to top up with ATF.
–  Tighten screw plug with new gasket ring to 15 Nm. This completes the ATF inspection.

If only the ATF present in the overflow tube flows out of the hole:
ATF must be topped up.
