Removing and Installing Shift Mechanism
  Note
t  After installing, check the shift mechanism → Chapter.
t  If the battery earth strap is disconnected and connected, carry out additional operations → Electrical System; Rep. Gr.27.
Removing
–  First check whether a coded radio set has been installed. If this is the case obtain the anti-theft code.
–  Shift selector lever to position “P”.
–  Disconnect the earth strap from the battery with the ignition off.
–  Remove grip of selector lever → Chapter.
–  Remove the centre console and extension → Body work; Rep. Gr.68.
–  Remove the cover → Chapter.
–  Separate the electrical plug connections → Chapter.
–  Detach the interlock cable from the locking lever and from the stop spring on the mounting case; to do this, lift the spring slightly.
–  Remove front exhaust system together with catalytic converter → Engine; Rep. Gr.26.
   
–  Remove the cover from the bearing pot -arrows-.

–  Press the locking clip -B- together at the ends and remove.
–  Pull the lock washer -A- for the selection lever control cable on the bearing pot downwards.
–  Pull out the selection lever control cable from the selection lever.
–  Unscrew the nuts (4 pieces) from above.
–  Remove bearing pot downwards.
–  Pull the selection lever control cable out of the bearing pot at the same time while ensuring that it does not get kinked.
Install
l  Selector lever and lever/gearshift shaft are in position “P”, the lever must interlock into the parking position.
–  Place lever/gearshift shaft on gearbox at “P”. Locking lever must engage in parking gear, both front wheels are blocked (cannot be simultaneously turned in one direction).
–  Push the sleeve of the selection lever control cable and the cover of the bearing pot onto the selection lever control cable.
–  Do not bend or buckle selector lever control cable.
–  Lead the selection lever control cable into the bearing cover.
–  Attach the bearing pot to the body.
–  Tighten up the nuts (4 pieces) from above.
–  Plug in the electrical plug connections → Chapter.
–  Install and adjust the locking lever → Chapter.
–  Install the cover → Chapter.
–  Install grip of the selector lever → Chapter.
–  Put the selection lever control cable onto the selection lever.
Fitting position:
  N37-0479
Angled end of the locking washer points -A- towards the end of the selector lever control cable.
–  Attach the locking washer -A- for the selection lever control cable onto the bearing pot.
–  Press the locking clip -B- together at the ends and push onto the end of the selection lever control cable.
–  Mount the cover. Watch out for the arrangement of the seal.

–  Tighten the nuts -arrows-.
–  Inspect setting of selector lever control cable and adjust if necessary → Chapter.
–  Checking the ignition key lock → Chapter.
–  Install front exhaust system together with catalytic converter → Engine; Rep. Gr.26.
–  Install the centre console and extension → Body work; Rep. Gr.68.
–  Connect earth cable of the battery.
–  Inspect gearshift mechanism → Chapter.
